Role Description

The Assessor is a full-time, on-site position based in the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson, South Carolina Area, serving McCormick County. This role is responsible for evaluating real property and, where applicable, personal property for tax assessment purposes in accordance with state laws and county policies. Day-to-day tasks include inspecting properties, gathering and analyzing data, applying valuation methods, maintaining accurate assessment records, and updating property information in relevant systems. The Assessor will meet with property owners to explain assessments, address inquiries or appeals, and provide clear, professional communication about assessment procedures. The role also involves preparing reports, collaborating with other county departments, staying current with regulatory changes, and contributing to fair, consistent property taxation across the county.

Qualifications

• Strong attention to detail, record-keeping, and organizational skills for maintaining property files and databases.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills to work with property owners, colleagues, and public officials in a professional manner.
• Basic proficiency with office software, assessment or GIS systems, and comfort learning new technology tools.
• Ability to conduct on-site property inspections, including traveling within the county and working indoors and outdoors as required.
• Understanding of, or willingness to learn, state and local property tax laws, regulations, and county assessment procedures.
• High school diploma or equivalent required; coursework or certification in property appraisal, real estate, public administration, or related fields is preferred.
• Prior experience in property assessment, appraisal, real estate, or a local government setting is beneficial but not always required.
