Responsibilities

  • Direct and supervise the personnel and operations of the Greenwood County Assessor’s Office.
  • Ensure appraisal and assessment functions are completed accurately, timely, and in accordance with South Carolina laws and regulations.
  • Lead, coach, and develop employees, including performance evaluations and growth opportunities.
  • Collaborate with Deputy Assessor and appraisal staff to meet deadlines and objectives.
  • Communicate with taxpayers and resolve complex property assessment questions.
  • Conduct research involving property ownership, boundaries, market values, and information necessary for property taxation.
  • Compile and analyze market data to establish real estate values using mass and individual appraisal practices.
  • Assist with commercial appeals, ATI matters, and reassessments.
  • Interpret and apply laws and regulations and ensure procedures and forms are compliant.
  • Develop and administer the department’s annual operating budget.
  • Coordinate with Auditor, Treasurer/Tax Collector, GIS, IT, and Data Processing.
  • Review processes and software for improvements to increase accuracy and efficiency.
  • Attend appeal conferences and assist with complex appraisal matters.
  • Communicate with County administration and County Council about departmental activities.

COUNTY ASSESSOR

Salary Range: $65,881 - $98,822

Required Certification:

  • Certified Residential Appraiser or Certified General Appraiser.

Greenwood County is seeking an experienced and knowledgeable professional to serve as County Assessor. This key leadership position is responsible for overseeing the assessment of real property and mobile homes throughout Greenwood County and managing the day-to-day operations and staff of the Assessor’s Office.

The ideal candidate will bring strong appraisal knowledge, proven supervisory experience, sound judgment, and the ability to work effectively with taxpayers, County leadership, elected officials, and other departments. This position requires an individual who can balance technical expertise with exceptional leadership and customer service.

Four-Day Workweek

What You'll Do

  • Interpret and apply applicable laws and regulations and ensure departmental procedures and forms remain compliant.
  • Develop and administer the department’s annual operating budget.
  • Coordinate with other County departments, including the Auditor, Treasurer/Tax Collector, GIS, IT, and Data Processing.
  • Review processes, data, forms, and software and recommend improvements to increase accuracy and efficiency.
  • Attend appeal conferences and assist with complex or non-routine appraisal matters.
  • Communicate regularly with County administration and County Council regarding departmental activities and issues.

What We're Looking For

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, liberal arts, political science, or a related field.
  • Ten years of appraisal experience, including supervisory experience involving performance evaluations, coaching, and employee discipline.
  • Experience working in local government and interacting with taxpayers.
  • Knowledge of applicable property assessment laws, regulations, and appraisal practices.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
