Job description

Job Summary

Responsible for managing reporting APPs and APP supervisors, including activities related to patient care, service line development, quality improvement, strategic planning, and policy enforcement. Ensures APP clinical work aligns with scope of practice and hospital policies. Assesses staffing effectiveness, skill mix, and develops responsive staffing systems. Mentors, coaches, and manages administrative duties such as hiring, onboarding, orientation, performance evaluations, OPPE/FPPE, etc. Represents APPs to external review bodies like the Joint Commission and the American College of Surgeons.

The position is typically 50% administrative and 50% clinical, as determined by the APP Director or VP of APP Services.

Note: This is a 40-hour position that may include off-shift hours, weekends, and holidays. The role provides leadership within a specialty service with potential for expansion to other APP teams based on organizational needs.

Essential Functions
  1. Collaborate with leadership to identify clinical growth opportunities and process improvements.
  2. Evaluate APP workforce needs and approve staffing requests.
  3. Work with the APP Director on recruitment, retention, and recognition efforts.
  4. Monitor financial metrics such as reimbursement, productivity, and utilization.
  5. Oversee CE/CME policies and expenses.
  6. Develop peer review and quality metrics, assist with chart reviews as needed.
  7. Develop FPPE in collaboration with physician leadership.
  8. Manage service line changes and communication between APP leadership and staff, including student placements.
  9. Oversee clinical training, orientation, billing, and coding education.
  10. Manage APP performance through evaluations, coaching, and disciplinary actions.
  11. Coordinate scheduling and handle unexpected staffing changes.
  12. Clinically work in 50% of the time in your area of expertise, as determined by leadership.
Supervision
  • Dual reporting to the APP Director and physician leader for administrative purposes.
Supervision Exercised
  • Administrative supervision over APPs in assigned areas.
Candidate Requirements
Physician Assistant:
  • Current Michigan license, NCCPA certification, DEA registration, BLS, 5+ years clinical, 2+ years leadership.
Nurse Practitioner:
  • Current Michigan licensure, graduate of accredited program, DEA registration, BLS, 5+ years clinical, 2+ years leadership.
