Job Summary

Responsible for managing reporting APPs and APP supervisors, including activities related to direct and facilitated patient care, service line development, quality improvement, strategic planning, and policy enforcement. Ensures APP clinical work adheres to scope of practice and hospital protocols. Assesses staffing effectiveness, skill mix, and develops responsive staffing systems. Mentors and coaches APPs, manages administrative duties such as hiring, onboarding, performance evaluations, and compliance with OPPE/FPPE. Represents APPs to external review agencies like the Joint Commission and the American College of Surgeons.

The position is typically 50% administrative and 50% clinical, in the area of expertise, or as directed by the APP Director or VP of APP Services.

Note: This is a 40-hour position that may include off-shift hours, weekends, and holidays based on service needs. The role provides leadership within the specialty service(s) with potential for expansion to other APP teams as needed.

Essential Functions

  • Collaborate with leadership to identify growth opportunities and process improvements. Participate in meetings and committees.
  • Evaluate APP workforce needs, approve staffing requests, and work on recruitment and retention strategies.
  • Review billing practices and monitor metrics like reimbursement, productivity, and utilization to ensure financial health.
  • Oversee CE/CME policies and expenses.
  • Develop peer review and quality metrics; assist with chart reviews for professional evaluation.
  • Develop and oversee professional practice evaluations in collaboration with physician leadership.
  • Manage service line changes with effective communication.
  • Develop clinical training, orientation, billing, and coding processes.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, coaching, and disciplinary actions as necessary.
  • Oversee scheduling and coordinate with APP Supervisors.
  • Clinically work in 50% of the role in the area of expertise, or as directed.

Supervision

  • The APP Manager reports to the relevant APP Director and physician leader, collaborating during clinical duties.

Supervision Exercised

  • Administer supervision over APPs within assigned areas.

Candidate Requirements

Physician Assistant: Current Michigan license, ARC-PA accredited program completion, NCCPA certification, Michigan Controlled Substance License, DEA registration, BLS (and possibly ACLS), 5 years clinical and 2 years leadership experience.

Nurse Practitioner: Michigan licensure, accredited NP program, DEA registration, BLS (and possibly ACLS), 5 years clinical and 2 years leadership experience.
