Description

Part-time, average of 20 hours per week

Reports to Animal Care Manager

The Richmond SPCA is a non-profit organization located in the heart of Richmond, Virginia. As a leader in animal welfare, we are committed to saving, protecting, and enriching animal lives. We aim to provide education and resources to achieve a no-kill community. Annually, we rescue, rehabilitate, and find homes for about 4,000 homeless animals, while providing vital safety net programs to keep pets in loving homes. Our values include collaboration, creativity, honesty, inclusion, and respect, guiding our actions and approach.

Essential Functions
  • Clean animal housing areas following protocols
  • Wash pet food and water containers
  • Scoop and clean litter boxes, spot clean housing areas
  • Walk dogs and assist with behavior modification
  • Assist with pet laundry and deliver bedding
  • Provide socialization, enrichment, and exercise
  • Ensure pets eat and take medications as scheduled
  • Maintain special feeding protocols for puppies, kittens, and animals with needs
  • Communicate with the Animal Care Manager and team
  • Report medical or behavioral concerns
  • Work with volunteers and respond professionally to questions
  • Notify supplies running low
  • Maintain cleanliness of work areas
  • Assist colleagues and perform side duties
  • Attend trainings and meetings
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
  • Ability to react productively to change
  • Work effectively in a fast-paced, high-stress environment
  • Reliable transportation, including in inclement weather
  • Must be 18 or older
  • Availability on weekends, holidays, and some weekdays

Physical Job Requirements
  • Lifting 40-50 lbs routinely
  • Push/pull large carts
  • Work around animals, loud noises, waste, chemicals
  • Bend, kneel, use arms repetitively
  • Stoop and use stairs
  • Stand for entire 8-hour shift
  • Perform cleaning duties effectively
Work Environment
  • Rapid pace with potential hazards
  • High noise levels
  • Potential for bites, scratches, zoonotic diseases
  • Team environment with passionate animal lovers
