Job description

Job Description: Animal Care Technician

This entry-level position reports to the Animal Resources Manager and is responsible for the daily care of research animals, including feeding, watering, cage changing, maintaining a clean work environment, and monitoring the overall health of the animals. The role requires a passion for animal welfare, dedication to providing clean living spaces, and flexibility in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment. You will work as part of a team, and your contributions will be valued.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Prepare and submit records, census sheets, room logs, cage cards, and inventories.
  2. Sanitize and decontaminate all areas of the facility.
  3. Follow room entry order and biosafety procedures.
  4. Dispose of waste following SOPs and waste streams.
  5. Receive, identify, and properly house incoming animal shipments according to SOPs.
  6. Maintain animal racks and support equipment.
  7. Assist with ordering, receipt, and stocking of supplies.
  8. Perform basic animal health treatments under veterinary supervision.
  9. Follow SOPs, safety procedures, and quality assurance guidelines for animal care at all biohazard levels (BSLI and BSLII).
  10. Perform daily animal health surveillance checks and report any abnormalities.
  11. Maintain a daily animal cage census in assigned rooms.
  12. Humanely euthanize animals as required or requested.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned under supervision.
Additional Qualifications:

Proficiency in SQ (Subcutaneous) and IP (Intraperitoneal) injections, mouse IV tail injections, isoflurane anesthesia, tumor measurements, and related research activities. These skills ensure the candidate can perform specialized tasks in biomedical research settings.

Required Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience in animal care and/or research involving mammals.
  • Manual dexterity, legible writing, and ability to operate a computer and telephone.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and understand SOPs and protocols.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, bend, stoop, climb, and stand for extended periods.
  • Willingness to wear full PPE (face mask, coveralls, gloves) for several hours daily.
