Position Overview

The Operations Leader - Animal Care promotes and ensures the efficient and effective operations of the Companion Animal Department. This role drives sales of aquatic pets, reptiles, birds, and small companion animals, and coaches Pet Care Center partners to support and enhance the guest experience and animal care. Responsibilities include training, developing, supporting operations scheduling, and leading a high-performing team to meet sales, gross margin, and animal and merchandise shrink targets. The role also involves managing all aspects of the Pet Care Center's business in line with Petco standards and safety procedures.

Position Responsibilities
  • Utilize business acumen to analyze trends and implement improvement plans.
  • Ensure the health and well-being of live animals according to Petco standards, including health checks and wellness documentation.
  • Adhere to Veterinary Protocols for sick animals.
  • Process transactions efficiently to enhance guest experience.
  • Support guest interactions with product knowledge and selling strategies.
  • Implement and execute Companion Animal Operations and Aquatics through training and coaching.
  • Order live animals to optimize sales, margin, and inventory, and analyze inventory data for improvements.
  • Maintain operational standards and complete animal-related maintenance tasks.
  • Ensure high presentation standards in aquatics and companion animal areas.
  • Partner with Merchandising to maintain proper stock levels.
  • Handle and document all adoption animals properly.
  • Use sales and margin reports to inform decisions.
  • Lead, provide feedback, and coach partners to deliver quality service.
  • Manage partner scheduling to meet in-stock and guest service goals during peak times.
  • Apply talent management skills in recruiting, hiring, training, and succession planning.
  • Provide excellent customer service and product recommendations.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent; some college preferred.
  • At least 1 year of management experience; 2+ preferred.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Proficiency in communication, organization, and computer skills (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Strong business, financial, analysis, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate guest service excellence and instruct others.
Supervisory Responsibilities

The Operations Leader supervises Operations Specialists and Senior Aquatics Specialists, supporting Pet Care Center operations and safety.

Work Environment

This role requires support during key hours, including weekends. Most tasks are indoors; some physical activity and travel may be involved, with safety precautions emphasized to prevent injury.

Contacts

This position involves ongoing contact with guests, partners, vendors, and other departments, including coordination of various Pet Care Center activities and events.
