Position Overview

The Operations Leader - Animal Care promotes and ensures the efficient and effective operations of the Companion Animal Department and drives sales of aquatic pets, reptiles, birds, and small companion animals. This leader will coach and mentor all Pet Care Center partners in processes to support and enhance the guest experience and animal care. Responsibilities include training, developing, supporting scheduling, and leading a high-performing team to meet sales, gross margin, and animal and merchandise shrink targets, while managing all aspects of the Pet Care Center’s business according to Petco standards and safety procedures.

Position Responsibilities
  • Use business acumen to analyze trends and implement improvement plans.
  • Ensure the health and well-being of live animals following Petco standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Adhere to Veterinary Protocols for all sick animals.
  • Process transactions to create a positive guest experience.
  • Support guest interactions and support the selling model.
  • Implement and execute Companion Animal Operations and Aquatics through training and coaching.
  • Order live animals to maximize sales, margin, and inventory, and analyze inventory data for improvements.
  • Maintain operational standards and animal-related maintenance tasks.
  • Achieve presentation standards in aquatics and companion animal areas.
  • Partner with Merchandising to ensure proper stock levels.
  • Handle and document all adoption animals properly.
  • Understand and utilize sales and margin reports and data.
  • Lead, coach, and provide feedback to all PCC partners to ensure quality service.
  • Manage partner scheduling to meet goals during peak hours.
  • Recruit, hire, train, and develop staff, including succession planning.
  • Provide excellent service, sharing product knowledge and suggesting appropriate merchandise.

Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; some college preferred.
  • Minimum 1 year management experience required; 2+ years preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Proficiency in communication, organization, and computer skills.
  • Strong guest service, analysis, and problem-solving skills.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Supervise Operations Specialists & Senior Aquatics Specialists.
  • Support Pet Care Center operations as Leader on Duty.
Work Environment

This role requires support during key hours, including weekends, with indoor duties and occasional outdoor activities. Physical activities include bending, kneeling, lifting up to 50 pounds, and standing for long periods. Some travel may be required.

Contacts

This position involves continuous contact with guests, partners, vendors, and other departments, both in the field and at support centers.
