Position Overview

The Operations Leader - Animal Care promotes and ensures the efficient and effective operation of the Companion Animal Department and drives sales of aquatic pets, reptiles, birds, and small companion animals. This role involves coaching and mentoring Pet Care Center partners to support and enhance the guest experience and animal care. The Operations Leader - Animal Care is responsible for training, developing, supporting scheduling, and leading a high-performing team to meet sales, gross margin, and animal and merchandise shrink targets. They also assist in managing all aspects of the Pet Care Center’s business in line with Petco standards and safety procedures.

Position Responsibilities

  • Utilize business acumen to measure, analyze, and diagnose business trends and implement improvement plans.
  • Ensure the health and well-being of live animals by providing proper care according to Petco standards, policies, and procedures, including health checks and wellness documentation.
  • Adhere to Veterinary Protocols for all sick animals.
  • Process transactions efficiently to create a positive guest experience.
  • Support guest interactions with strong selling skills and product knowledge.
  • Implement and execute Companion Animal Operations and Aquatics through training and coaching in areas such as Animal Care, Aquatics, Maintenance, Ordering, and Regulatory Compliance.
  • Order live animals efficiently to maximize sales, margin, and inventory; analyze inventory data for improvements.
  • Maintain operational standards in the department.
  • Complete all animal-related maintenance tasks as per the Maintenance Task List.
  • Maintain high presentation standards in aquatics and companion animal areas.
  • Partner with Merchandising to ensure proper stock levels and achieve goals.
  • Handle and document all Adoption Animals properly.
  • Monitor PCC Sales and Margin reports and data.
  • Lead, provide feedback, and coach PCC partners to deliver quality service and perform their tasks effectively.
  • Ensure proper partner scheduling to meet in-stock and guest service goals during peak hours.
  • Apply talent management skills in recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, coaching, and succession planning.
  • Provide quick and courteous service by determining guest needs, sharing product knowledge, and suggesting appropriate merchandise.

  • Engage with the team and represent Petco positively, leading with high standards in a fun work environment.
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; some college preferred.
  • At least 1 year of management experience required; 2 or more preferred.
  • Must hold a valid driver's license.
  • Proficiency in communication, organizational, and computer skills (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Strong business, finance, analysis, and people development skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent guest service and instruct others effectively.
Supervisory Responsibility

The Operations Leader - Animal Care supervises Operations Specialists & Senior Aquatics Specialists and supports Pet Care Center operations as a Leader on Duty, ensuring safety, attendance, and adherence to policies.

Work Environment

This role requires support during key hours, including weekends. Most duties are indoors, with occasional physical tasks like stocking and moving merchandise (up to 50 pounds). Some travel may be required.

Contacts

This position involves ongoing contact with the public, other departments, distribution centers, and external vendors for various operational needs.
