Position Overview

The Operations Leader - Animal Care promotes and ensures the efficient and effective operations of the Companion Animal Department, driving sales of aquatic pets, reptiles, birds, and small companion animals. This role involves coaching and mentoring Pet Care Center partners to support and enhance the guest experience and animal care. The Operations Leader - Animal Care is responsible for training, developing, supporting operations scheduling, and leading a high-performing team to meet sales, gross margin, and animal and merchandise shrink targets. They will also assist in managing all aspects of the Pet Care Center’s business in accordance with Petco standards and safety procedures.

Position Responsibilities
  • Utilize business acumen to analyze trends and implement business improvement plans.
  • Ensure the health and well-being of live animals by providing proper care following Petco standards and policies.
  • Adhere to veterinary protocols for all sick animals.
  • Process transactions efficiently to provide a great guest experience.
  • Support guest interactions, support selling strategies, and support the implementation of operational standards.
  • Order live animals to maximize sales, margin, and inventory, analyzing data for improvements.
  • Maintain operational standards and ensure animal-related maintenance tasks are completed.
  • Achieve high presentation standards in aquatics and companion animal areas.
  • Partner with merchandising to ensure proper stock levels.
  • Handle and document all adoption animals properly.
  • Understand and utilize sales and margin reports for decision-making.
  • Lead, coach, and provide feedback to team members to ensure quality service.
  • Support scheduling to meet in-stock and guest service goals during peak hours.
  • Apply talent management skills in recruiting, hiring, training, and succession planning.
  • Provide excellent guest service by understanding needs and sharing product knowledge.
Other Essential Duties

  • Promote safety and ensure policies and procedures are followed.
  • Foster a collaborative culture and encourage team ideas and efficiency improvements.
  • Prioritize talent development and ensure a strong talent bench.
  • Engage with the team and represent Petco’s brand positively.
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent; some college preferred.
  • At least 1 year of management experience required; 2+ years preferred.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Proficiency in communication, organizational, and computer skills.
  • Strong guest service and leadership skills.
Supervisory Responsibility

Direct supervision of Operations Specialists & Senior Aquatics Specialists, and support during store opening/closing as Leader on Duty.

Work Environment

Support during key hours, with some physical activity involved. Occasional travel may be required.

Contacts

Regular contact with guests, team members, and external vendors for various operational needs.
