Job summary

RWE Americas, LLC is seeking a Principal AI Engineer to lead platform-level AI capabilities, setting technical patterns for multiple squads and ensuring responsible AI practices across deployment, monitoring, and governance. The role focuses on building scalable, cost-efficient AI services with strong mentorship for engineers.

The candidate will own design decisions, drive adoption of reference implementations, and partner with the AI Platform leadership to meet enterprise objectives.

Qualifications

• Master’s or PhD in computer science, data science, STEM, or related field required.
• 11+ years of relevant professional experience in software or AI/ML engineering roles, including demonstrated experience building and operating shared platform capabilities.
• Deep expertise in enterprise-scale AI development and platform architecture.
• Production experience with a major cloud platform, Python, containerized deployment and CI/CD for AI services, and current LLM orchestration and agent frameworks.
• Extensive experience integrating and operating shared AI platform services in a production enterprise environment, with personal accountability for reliability and supportability.
• Hands-on ownership of evaluation, guardrail, and audit infrastructure for responsible AI.
• Ability to mentor and develop junior AI engineers.
• Experience with IT/OT environments, industrial data sources, or operational technology systems preferred.
• Experience in the power, utilities, or clean energy sector preferred.
• Office-based role with travel; ability to sit, walk, or stand for long durations.

Responsibilities

• Integrate and operate the shared AI platform capabilities across squads and business units.
• Define reference implementations for AI development and drive their adoption.
• Operationalize responsible AI at the platform level with evaluation and guardrail infrastructure.
• Deliver AI platform cost efficiency through instrumentation and product-level economics.
• Lead design reviews, coach senior engineers, and evolve platform standards.
