Job summary

Groundswell is hiring an AI engineer to take business problems from discovery through design, build, validation, and operation. You will own capabilities end to end, define requirements, select AI patterns, and ensure measurable success while balancing cost and latency.

You will mentor others and help clients understand possibilities in a fast-paced federal-oriented environment. The role spans client delivery, internal product development, rapid proofs of concept, and enablement, requiring

Qualifications

• 4+ years building and shipping production software.
• At least 1 year of hands-on experience building apps that integrate LLMs, including prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation, structured extraction, tool use, and agent patterns.
• Demonstrated ability to own a capability end to end, from ambiguous requirement to production.
• Experience evaluating AI system quality with metrics and test sets.
• Strong programming ability in Python, TypeScript, or SQL applied across full stack.

Responsibilities

• Lead requirements conversations with business and technical stakeholders, covering workflow, decisions, and success criteria.
• Define technical approach and defend it; select AI pattern appropriate to the problem.
• Recommend against AI when a simpler solution suffices (rules, processes, interfaces).
• Define measurable success criteria before building (accuracy targets, human review thresholds, acceptance conditions).
• Build the complete capability end to end (prompt design, retrieval, integrations, data handling, UI).
• Build evaluation sets from real data and iterate based on results.
• Make architecture decisions considering quality, cost, latency, security, authorization.
• Operationalize capabilities in the client environment with governance and traceability.
• Mentor engineers new to AI; share reusable patterns.
• Maintain knowledge of models and tooling for the team.
• Produce client-facing documentation and design rationale.
