Job summary

Groundswell in the United States is seeking an engineer to own capabilities end to end—from discovery and design to build, validation, and operation after release. You’ll work across client delivery, internal product development, rapid proofs of concept, and enablement, while guiding teams as the AI-literate authority.

This growing role requires mentoring engineers new to AI and maintaining current knowledge of models, tooling, and techniques.

Qualifications

• 4+ years building and shipping production software.
• 1 year hands-on experience integrating LLMs including prompt engineering, retrieval augmented generation, structured extraction, tool use, and agent patterns.
• Ability to own a capability end to end from ambiguous requirement to production.
• Experience evaluating AI system quality with metrics and evidence.
• Strong programming ability in Python, TypeScript, or SQL across the full app, not just AI.
• Lead requirements conversations with non-technical stakeholders and translate to technical approach.
• Balance accuracy, cost, latency and complexity; explain tradeoffs to engineers and executives.
• Excellent written communication for client-facing docs and design rationales.
• Independent work in ambiguous environments; willingness to teach others.
• U.S. Citizenship required for government engagements.

Responsibilities

• Lead requirements conversations with business and technical stakeholders.
• Define the technical approach and defend AI patterns appropriate to the problem.
• Recommend simpler solutions when AI is not needed; identify process changes and better interfaces.
• Define measurable success criteria before building.
• Build the complete capability including prompts, retrieval, APIs, data handling, and UI.
• Create evaluation sets and iterate based on results.
• Make architecture decisions considering quality, cost, latency, security, and authorization.
• Operationalize capabilities with governance, logging, and drift monitoring.
• Educate clients on possibilities and shape future work; mentor new AI engineers.
• Maintain current knowledge of models and tooling; share reusable patterns.
• Move between client work, internal product development, quick PoCs, and enablement.
• Produce documentation detailing capabilities, limitations, validation, and failure scenarios.
