Job summary

Groundswell is seeking an experienced engineer to own AI-enabled capabilities from discovery to production, including design, build, validation, and operation. You will balance technical rigor with practical pragmatism, choosing the right AI pattern and ensuring robust integration across systems.

You will lead stakeholder conversations, set measurable success criteria, and mentor teammates as you push for innovative, secure, and cost-aware solutions in a fast-paced federal-facing environment.

Qualifications

• 4+ years building and shipping production software.
• At least 1 year of hands-on experience building applications that integrate large language models, including prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation, structured extraction, tool use, and agent patterns.
• Demonstrated ability to own a capability end to end, from an ambiguous requirement through to production.

Responsibilities

• Lead requirements conversations with business and technical stakeholders covering workflow and acceptance criteria.
• Define the technical approach and defend the AI pattern chosen for the problem.
• Recommend against AI when a simpler solution suffices (rules, processes, interfaces).
• Define measurable success criteria before building, including accuracy targets and thresholds.
• Build the complete capability end-to-end, including prompts, retrieval, APIs, and UI.
• Develop evaluation sets and iterate based on results with data-driven decisions.
• Make architecture decisions balancing quality, cost, latency, and security.
• Operationalize capabilities with governance, logging, and drift monitoring.
• Mentor engineers new to AI through code reviews and guidance.
