EY is advancing AI-enabled services with Challenger, a new EY program focused on building the firm’s next generation of offerings. Challenger Core develops shared technology, methods, and guardrails to support rapid, cost-effective service delivery.

The role seeks an engineer with founder-like ownership, capable of moving from user conversations to prototypes, secure services, and production evaluation within the same product cycle. 50% travel possible with hybrid office readiness.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of relevant and applicable experience.
• Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field of study.
• End-to-end delivery: taking software from concept to launch, learning, and adoption.
• Technical breadth across frontend, backend, API, data, and cloud technologies, demonstrated through shipped work.
• Applied AI experience: building products with large language models, retrieval, tools, or comparable AI patterns.
• Evaluation experience: automated testing and behavioral evaluation for probabilistic systems.
• Live-service ownership: telemetry, debugging, reliability, incident response, and performance improvement.
• User-centered practice: collaborating with users, designers, and product leaders to turn evidence into product decisions.
• Engineering craft: clear specifications, maintainable code, thoughtful reviews, and sound technical trade-offs.
• Travel up to 50% and hybrid-capable office flexibility.

Responsibilities

• Start with the user and understand real workflows with domain experts.
• Test assumptions quickly with concise specifications, prototypes, and small releases.
• Own complete product slices across experience, services, data, AI behavior, and integrations.
• Shape AI behavior with instructions, context, retrieval, and tool use.
• Build the evidence system with representative tasks and automated evaluations.
• Instrument user journeys to relate adoption and system behavior, latency, failures, and cost.
• Engineer for responsible use with clear permission boundaries, secure data handling, and rollback.
