Job summary

Coinbase, Inc. is seeking a founding engineer to embed within Legal and lead automation initiatives using Coinbase's AI platform. You will translate complex legal workflows into engineering requirements, prototype solutions, and drive measurable adoption across the Legal org.

You will create an end-to-end automation roadmap with senior leaders, ensure outputs are defensible and auditable, and champion responsible, human-guided AI across high-stakes workstreams.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of software engineering experience in ambigious, stakeholder-heavy environments.
• Hands-on experience deploying LLM-based applications, including prompt engineering, evaluation frameworks, and human-in-the-loop design.
• Proven ability to embed with non-technical domain experts and translate workflows into engineering requirements.
• Familiarity with legal/compliance systems concepts: contract lifecycle management, regulatory filing workflows, entity governance, privilege-sensitive data handling.
• Does not need to be an attorney, but should be open to learning.
• Familiarity with multi-agent orchestration and agent-system handoffs, escalation, and auditability.
• Experience in Forward Deployed Engineering, Solutions Engineering, or embedded technical advisory in legal-tech or RegTech environments.
• Utilizes generative AI responsibly with human oversight to improve workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.

Responsibilities

• Embed with Legal leadership to surface automation opportunities with greatest business leverage.
• Prototype quickly using Coinbase's AI platform as the baseline foundation.
• Own the Legal automation roadmap in partnership with VP of Legal and CCO; translate workflows into engineering requirements.
• Define build-vs-buy strategy for Legal tooling and determine what to build, adopt, procure, or retire.
• Ensure automated outputs are traceable, reviewable, and defensible with auditability and human-in-the-loop controls.
• Drive adoption through brown-bags, prototype walkthroughs, and feedback loops with Legal teams.
