Job summary

The YMCA of South Hampton Roads is seeking a Counselor II to provide a safe, inclusive child care experience for children aged 5-12. You will serve as a mentor, role model and facilitator, guiding kids through recreational, educational and character-building activities to foster confidence and lasting memories.

You will supervise, lead activities, support behavior guidance, and promote inclusive relationships across diverse backgrounds. Wage range is $12.77–$14.00 hourly with flexible hours.

Qualifications

• Must be 18+ years old.
• High school diploma or the equivalent.
• CPR/First Aid within 30 days of hire.
• Background checks completed prior to start.
• Good character and reputation.
• Ability to work flexible hours.
• Ability to build positive relationships across backgrounds.

Responsibilities

• Ensure safety and well-being of children at all times.
• Lead and assist in a diverse range of activities including sports, arts, STEM.
• Manage groups, promote teamwork and cooperation.
• Support positive behavior guidance and self-regulation.
• Create an inclusive, welcoming environment for all children.
• Communicate with children, parents, staff and YMCA leadership.
• Participate in training and professional development opportunities.
