Job summary

The YMCA of South Hampton Roads is seeking a Counselor II to provide a safe, inclusive, and enriching child care experience for children aged 5-12. You will mentor, model, and facilitate activities to build social skills, confidence, and lasting memories.

You will supervise, lead, and support a diverse program with emphasis on safety, inclusivity, and development while adhering to YMCA standards and licensing requirements.

Qualifications

• Be at least 18 years of age
• Have a high school diploma or the equivalent
• Meet the minimum qualifications for Lead Teacher as defined by VA DOE
• Staff must be of good character and reputation
• CPR/First Aid certifications within 30 days of hire
• Completes all pre-employment requirements including background checks
• Adequate speaking, hearing and writing skills for interacting with children
• Punctuality and reliability for scheduled shifts
• Ability to work at various program locations
• Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds

Responsibilities

• Ensure the safety and well-being of children during activities and meals
• Lead and assist in delivering a range of activities (sports, arts, STEM, etc.)
• Foster positive relationships and teamwork among children
• Model and reinforce positive behavior
• Create an inclusive and welcoming environment for all children
• Communicate with children, parents/guardians, staff and leadership
• Participate in training, staff meetings, and professional development
