Job summary

YMCA of South Hampton Roads is seeking a Counselor II to provide a safe, inclusive, and enriching program for children ages 5-12. You will mentor, role-model, and facilitate a variety of recreational, educational, and character-building activities.

Responsibilities include supervising activities, delivering diverse programs, managing groups, guiding behavior, and communicating with families. Willingness to participate in ongoing training is essential in supporting our mission-driven culture.

Qualifications

• Be at least 18 years of age.
• Have a high school diploma or the equivalent.
• Meet the VA DOE Lead Teacher qualifications for childcare.
• Staff must be of good character and reputation.
• CPR/First Aid certifications required within 30 days of hire.
• Complete all pre-employment requirements including background checks.
• Adequate speaking, hearing and writing skills for interacting with children.

Responsibilities

• Supervision and safety: ensure safety of children at all times and enforce safety protocols.
• Programming: lead and assist in activities including sports, arts and crafts, nature exploration, team-building and STEM.
• Group management: foster positive relationships, promote teamwork, and resolve conflicts.
• Behavior management: reinforce positive behaviors and support self-regulation.
• Inclusion and diversity: create an inclusive environment where all children are valued.
• Communication: interact with children, parents/guardians, staff and leadership.
• Professional development: participate in training and staff meetings to enhance skills.
