Job summary

The Flatbush YMCA in New York is looking for an Activity Specialist for STEM within the Afterschool program. This part-time role focuses on delivering engaging, age‑appropriate STEM instruction to school‑age children, creating a safe and inclusive learning space, and preparing lessons aligned with a project-based curriculum.

Under the supervision of the Program Director, you will design lessons, manage materials and safety, assess progress, and help plan an end‑of‑cycle showcase.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent required. College credits and formal education in a related field are preferred.
• Minimum of two (2) years of experience in the science, technology, engineering, or math discipline.
• Direct experience working with children under the age of 13.
• Content expert in the designated subject matter.
• General knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Strong interpersonal skills, leadership qualities, and comfortable working with diverse youth and adults.

Responsibilities

• Design a comprehensive STEM curriculum using detailed lesson plans with clear goals tailored to various grade levels.
• Lead and facilitate daily STEM activities, promoting teamwork, critical thinking, and problem solving.
• Incorporate diverse STEM subjects including coding, robotics, and data analysis.
• Plan for materials, equipment, and safety considerations for projects.
• Assess progress formally and informally to track engagement.
• Support end‑of‑cycle showcase preparation and display organization.
• Maintain program documentation and coordinate with staff and partners.
• Ensure inclusive, respectful environment and safety at all times.
