Job summary

YMCA of Western North Carolina is seeking an Afterschool Counselor to supervise participants from kindergarten through 8th grade. You will help lead activities that support academic and social growth in a safe, nurturing, and inclusive setting.

You will use resources from the Program Coordinator to introduce new skills and enhance learning during activities. A commitment to the YMCA mission and values is essential, with responsibilities across daily programming and family engagement.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 16 years of age or older.
• Experience with children or teens preferred, but not required.
• Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic backgrounds.
• Specific certifications and/or training may be required.
• Strong oral, auditory, and written communication skills appropriate for interacting with children and adults.

Responsibilities

• Ensure safety and engagement of all children in the assigned group.
• Offer homework support and encourage academic progress.
• Follow program lesson plans thoughtfully for each child.
• Cultivate a nurturing environment that supports exploration and positive play.
• Maintain open communication with supervisor and participate in parent/family events.
• Model inclusive behaviors and respect diversity.
• Adhere to YMCA policies and relevant regulations.
