Job summary

Heart of Los Angeles is seeking a Bridges Tutor to support youth ages 10–18 with homework and projects, providing academic guidance to improve performance across subjects. The role promotes discipline and encourages students to complete assignments and engage deeply with class work.

You will plan an enrichment class weekly, monitor homework, and collaborate with the Bridges team to create a positive learning environment. This part-time position requires availability after school hours in LA.

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing a college degree, with successful completion of college-level English and Math coursework (grade of B or higher)
• Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred
• Experience working with middle- and high school-aged youth, modeling positive and compassionate behavior as a mentor and role model
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and professionally, both verbally and in writing
• A genuine enthusiasm for engaging and connecting with youth
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
• Experience supporting marginalized communities, and students from historically underserved or underrepresented communities
• Must pass CA DOJ Background check

Responsibilities

• Facilitate small groups and/or one-on-one reading, math or/and science comprehension sessions for students struggling in those subjects when necessary
• Plan and teach an academic enrichment class once a week
• Check students' homework to ensure they have completed their assignments adequately
• Be cooperative with managing students and be prepared at all times to work diligently for the betterment of Heart of Los Angeles’ youth
• Be punctual and communicate any concerns or questions to the Bridges Staff
• Create and foster a positive academic/career-enriching environment for all youth (grades 6th-12th)
• Support Heart of Los Angeles in all areas of after-school programming
• Develop and implement academic assignments for students with low academic performance in order to enhance their learning and interest in the subject
• Gain and maintain knowledge of current educational issues/trends
