Job summary

The University of Nebraska Medical Center's Neurosurgery department is seeking a department administrator responsible for fiscal and administrative oversight, reporting to the Department Chair, ensuring adherence to UNMC policies and coordinating with College of Medicine and clinical partners.

This role manages non-faculty personnel, budgets, and financial operations across multiple sites, with Monday–Friday, 8:00AM–5:00PM, and a hybrid work arrangement that combines on-site and off-site work.

Qualifications

  • Ability to counsel superiors on alternative actions and develop complex contracts.
  • Experience in developing contracts across departments or partners.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee fiscal and administrative operations for the Neurosurgery department.
  • Coordinate business affairs, manage non-faculty personnel, and work with College of Medicine and clinical partners on budgets.
  • Collaborate with multiple organizations (UNMC, NM/UNMC Physicians, CHMC, VA) to advance educational, research, and clinical goals.
  • Partner with the Chair for long-range planning and development; work with clinic management on site variations.

Position Summary

Department administrator for Neurosurgery is responsible for the fiscal and administrative oversight, and accountable to the Department Chair for adherence to all UNMC and Nebraska Medicine (NM)/ UNMC Physicians ( UNMCP ) policies & procedures as well as any other academic and clinical partners.

Coordinate the business affairs, manage its non-faculty personnel, and work with the College of Medicine and any clinical partners regarding the budget and financial operations.

Work with multiple partner organizations ( UNMC , UNMCP /NM, Children’s Hospital and Medical Center ( CHMC ) and VA to accomplish the strategic educational, research and clinical goals of the department.

Collaborate with the Chairperson on long range planning and development. Work closely with clinic management on the fiscal and operational aspects of varying sites at which clinicians practice.

Clinical

1. Ability to collaborate and manage across multiple organizations

2. Advanced understanding of health care financial management concepts

3. Understanding of principles, methods and procedures of modern health care administration and organization, including linkage systems with other health organizations

4. Knowledge of principles of modern outpatient care service management and coordination

5. Awareness of applicable federal, and state laws, rules and regulations related to clinical operation and professional fee billing

6. Knowledge of information systems, business processes and computer hardware/software, especially related to billing/collections for professional fees.

7. Administrative problems involved in the operation of clinic services

Research

1. Understanding of pre-award budget preparation and related regulations such as Medicare coverage analysis, coordination of IRB or IACUC protocols, justifications

2. Understanding of post-award administration including set-up process, reconciliation, regular review, progress reports and close-out process

3. Knowledge of and compliance with award-specific and relevant federal, state and local laws and regulations to include A-21 and A-133 requirements.

4. Understanding of strategic planning for research enterprise of division/department in collaboration with Chair or Division Chief

5. Ability to act as liaison with sponsors, subcontractors, and collaborators across the enterprise

Education

1. General knowledge and awareness of educator and student rights and responsibilities
