Responsibilities

  • Open and close cases, including running conflict checks.
  • Word process documents such as CORI requests, subpoenas, motions, letters, and running sheet entries.
  • File, fax, photocopy, scan, and shred documents, transcription requests, and other record requests as necessary.
  • Provide telephone and reception services.
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external contacts at all levels, especially with diverse and underrepresented groups.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Position Overview

The Committee for Public Counsel Services (CPCS) is Massachusetts’s public defender agency. The Public Defender Division in Malden is seeking a full‑time Administrative Assistant to support attorneys who provide legal representation and advocacy to indigent adults in criminal misdemeanor and felony cases. The role reports to the Supervising Administrative Assistant.

Qualifications & Skills
  • One year of full‑time or equivalent part‑time administrative work, or an associate’s degree or higher in business administration, business management, or public administration (partial credit for coursework).
  • Access to reliable home internet sufficient for remote work.
  • Typing speed of 50–60 WPM preferred.
  • Familiarity with advanced Word formatting and editing, and Microsoft Excel.
  • Legal office experience is a plus.
