We are seeking an Accounting Manager / Senior Accounting Manager who combines strong leadership with a willingness to work in the details. This role is ideal for a hands-on accounting leader who takes ownership of the general ledger, performs and reviews reconciliations, prepares and reviews journal entries, and drives a disciplined month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close process.
The right candidate will ensure accuracy, strengthen internal controls, support financial reporting, and help build scalable accounting processes while remaining closely engaged in the underlying transactions and supporting documentation.
Key Responsibilities
Month-End & Close Process
- Lead and actively participate in the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes.
- Prepare, review, and approve complex journal entries, including accruals, prepaids, fixed assets, intercompany activity, leases, debt, and other recurring/non-recurring entries.
- Ensure all journal entries are properly supported, accurately coded, and recorded in accordance with GAAP and company policies.
- Own close timelines and drive timely completion of deliverables across the accounting team.
Account Reconciliations & Balance Sheet Integrity
- Perform and review detailed balance sheet reconciliations across all major accounts, including:
- Cash
- Accounts receivable
- Accounts payable
- Prepaids
- Fixed assets
- Debt
- Leases
- Credit Cards
- Payroll-related accounts
- Intercompany accounts
- Investigate and resolve reconciling items, aged balances, and unexplained variances.
- Maintain high standards around reconciliation documentation, support, and review procedures.
- Ensure reconciliations are completed timely and accurately each month with clear audit trails.
Construction & Job Cost Accounting
- Help implement POC accounting for construction projects.
- Manage and oversee job cost accounting processes across multiple projects.
- Review project cost reports and analyze labor, material, subcontractor, and equipment costs for accuracy and completeness.
- Partner with project managers and operations teams to validate project financial performance.
- Assist in preparation and review of:
- Project profitability reporting
- Over/under billings
- Change order tracking
- Monitor committed costs and ensure proper revenue and expense recognition.
General Ledger Management
- Maintain integrity and accuracy of the general ledger.
- Analyze GL activity and investigate unusual trends, posting errors, or inconsistencies.
- Identify opportunities to improve chart of accounts structure and accounting workflows.
- Ensure proper accounting treatment for new or complex transactions.
- Assist in preparation of monthly financial statements and supporting schedules.
- Perform flux analysis and provide explanations for material variances.
- Support management reporting with accurate and timely financial information.
- Partner cross-functionally to ensure financial data completeness and accuracy.
Audit & Compliance
- Support external and internal audits by preparing schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, internal controls, and company accounting policies.
- Assist with implementation and monitoring of accounting controls and process documentation.
Process Improvement
- Identify inefficiencies, control gaps, and opportunities for automation within accounting operations.
- Improve reconciliation processes, close procedures, and documentation standards.
- Help establish scalable accounting processes and best practices.
- Train the team on new areas for their development and growth
- Partner with accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, operations, and other business functions to ensure transactions are recorded accurately and completely.
- Assist with special projects, system implementations, acquisitions, or process transitions as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; CPA preferred.
- Accounting Manager: 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including supervisory responsibility.
- Senior Accounting Manager: 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leading complex close and reporting processes.
- Construction accounting experience preferred.
- Strong command of U.S. GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls.
- Demonstrated experience preparing and reviewing journal entries, reconciliations, account analyses, and close documentation.
- High level of proficiency in ERP systems and Microsoft Excel, including the ability to work efficiently in large data sets.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to investigate issues, resolve discrepancies, and document conclusions clearly.
- Organized, deadline-driven, and detail-oriented, with a high standard for accuracy and completeness.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work cross-functionally with both finance and non-finance teams.
- Preferred Experience
- Experience in a mid-sized or high-growth environment where the accounting team must balance strong controls with practical execution.
- Background in managing or participating deeply in month-end close, audit preparation, and financial statement review.
- Experience improving reconciliation processes, standardizing journal entry support, and building efficient close procedures.
- Familiarity with multi-entity environments, intercompany accounting, or consolidations is a plus.
- Experience partnering with operations leadership to explain financial results and improve transaction accuracy.
