Los Alamos National Laboratory is hiring a Research and Development Engineer (R&D Engineer 2 or 3) to join the Mechanical Design and Engineering Team at LANSCE. The role focuses on industrial cooling water systems for accelerator operations, with design, analysis, operation, and maintenance tasks across the MDE organization.

Qualifications

• Proven track record on high-impact R&D projects.
• Ability to read/interpret ASME Y14.5 drawings.
• Experience with CAD/CAM software, specifically SolidWorks.
• Team-oriented with ability to work hands-on with the team.
• Willingness to perform repairs and maintenance along the beam line.
• Independent work ethic and collaborative mindset.
• Effective communication with scientists and technicians.
• Commitment to safety and security practices.
• Capable of working in radiation areas per ALARA principles.
• Fundamental knowledge of water cooling system design/operation.

Responsabilités

• Design, analyze, operate, troubleshoot, and improve cooling water systems.
• Perform hydraulic and thermal analyses to optimize reliability.
• Design piping, circuits, layouts, and mechanical assemblies with CAD.
• Select pumps, heat exchangers, valves, and instrumentation.
• Investigate failures and develop corrective actions to improve reliability.
• Support installation, commissioning, testing, operation, and maintenance of equipment.
• Develop drawings, specifications, calculations, and documentation.
• Collaborate with scientists, engineers, and technicians for practical solutions.
• Support other MDE projects as priorities require.
• Ensure work complies with standards, safety requirements, and QA.
