Job Summary

Direct/Manage/Supervise the design and implementation of projects that carry out the mission of the Division of the Physician Assistant Education and Sciences, at the University of Utah. Develop strategies and goals to create projects offering the greatest impact to the Utah Physician Assistant Program. Determine short- and long-term project plans to meet organization goals. Assist the Faculty Director of Clinical Education to oversee the coordination and daily work activities of the program staff. Represent the interest of the PA program both inside and outside of the organization. Manage 2-3 individual contributor program staff members as a first-level manager. Responsible for hiring, firing, performance appraisals, and pay reviews. Experience in higher education and demonstrated leadership skills are preferred. This position reports to the Director of Education, Student Advising and Activities.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Ensure the PA program clinical rotation schedule is up to date, rotations are in the program database, and all stakeholders are notified of changes. Arrange personal rotation referrals as appropriate.
  • Manage and meet the objectives outlined for the Salt Lake Clinical Schedule, communicate rotation schedule and its changes to students in a timely manner.
  • Ensure clinical requirements are in place, credentialing is done, evaluations are sent out, and affiliation agreements are in place.
  • Manage Clinical Site Inventory by regularly updating the changes on clinical site personnel and preceptors. Regularly recruit adequate placement options for Clinical Year Students and Didactic Clinical Experience Students. Work with the Faculty Director of Clinical Education and clinical team faculty to identify areas of low inventory.
  • Meet with students to discuss clinical rotation needs, answer questions, and respond to general questions and/or concerns through face-to-face meetings, phone calls, and/or email.
  • Attend Central Scheduling Committee meetings at University of Utah Health.
  • Help guide potential adjunct clinical preceptor candidates through the application process.
  • Organize on-campus activities for clinical year students, including scheduling classrooms, managing lab equipment and supplies, and arranging exam proctors.
  • Assist Clinical Team Faculty with return visit planning and execution.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Oversee all aspects of clinical team staff management, including recruitment and retention of assigned staff. Ensures competency of management/supervisory staff through the development and/or presentation of educational programs and through ongoing staff performance evaluation.
  • Delegate to other staff members as appropriate, balancing team members’ workload.
  • May participate in search committees for new hires in the division, including both staff and faculty roles.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related area plus three years of experience in budget, grant and program management or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required. Develops and implements program ideas into successful academic and research programs; demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.
