Job description

The Powertrain Control Systems Simulation Engineer is responsible for the development, maintenance, and continuous improvement of model-in-the-loop (MIL) and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation environments used for the software verification & validation of powertrain control units for Ford Trucks heavy commercial vehicle, engine and various electric vehicle (xEV) programs. The role focuses primarily on powertrain control system simulation, model development and supporting software verification activities.

The engineer will work closely with the software development engineers, verification and validation engineers, system engineers, calibration engineers and internal customers to ensure that the simulation environments accurately represent vehicle and powertrain behaviour and support timely, high-quality software verification.

The responsibilities are outlined below:
  • Develop, configure and maintain MIL and HIL simulation environments used for powertrain control units’ software verification and validation.
  • Develop, integrate and validate plant models (engine, transmission, thermal, braking, battery, electric motor, camera, environment etc.) required for simulation environments.
  • Support and execute testing and validation activities on MIL and HIL simulation environments.
  • Support internal customers by preparing simulation platforms and supporting software verification test cases on simulation platforms.
  • Investigate test failures by reviewing simulation data, software behaviour and requirements, and coordinate with engineering teams responsible for solutions.
  • Support wiring harness, configuration and commissioning of HIL hardware and control units in the simulation laboratory.
  • Use MATLAB/Simulink, dSPACE ControlDesk, dSPACE ConfigurationDesk, ETAS INCA, Vector CANape, Vector CANalyzer, BUSMASTER and related tools to establish simulation environment, automate and execute test cases.
  • Record and analyse controller area network (CAN), and local interconnect network (LIN) communication protocol data to verify behaviour of simulation platforms and control unit software.
  • Measure, record, and analyse electrical signals via measurement devices to verify behaviour of simulation platform and control unit software.
  • Track simulation platform software/hardware configuration and ensure platforms are kept up to date with the latest control unit software levels.
  • Support continuous improvement and automation of simulation environments and test processes.
  • Act as a technical point of contact between the simulation team and software/system engineering teams.
  • Create training documents or presentations for simulation environments process, tool/software usage
  • Maintain and report the inventory of control units, simulation tools, software licenses and laboratory usage; ensuring accurate tracking and effective communication with stakeholders.
  • Represent the HIL laboratory during internal and external visits by presenting laboratory capabilities, simulation technologies and ongoing engineering activities.
  • Support the organization, arrangement and maintenance of the simulation laboratory to ensure a safe and productive working environment.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Hands-on experience with MATLAB/Simulink/Simscape model development is a must.
  • Solid understanding of control algorithms, open-loop and closed-loop simulation methodologies, and discrete-time model development for automotive control systems.
  • Professional or educational experience in MIL & HIL simulation environments, automotive control systems, or software verification is an advantage.
  • Understanding of hardware signal types commonly used in automotive and their characteristics, including analog, digital, PWM, frequency and communication signals is a plus.
  • Experience with using laboratory measurement equipment to monitor, analyse and record various electrical signals for troubleshooting and validation activities is an advantage.
  • Experience with HIL simulation platforms and interface programs such as dSPACE ControlDesk and dSPACE ConfigurationDesk is a plus
