Job summary

SAUDI GEOPHYSICAL CONSULTING OFFICE is seeking an Operations Geoscientist for the Unconventional Program in Saudi Arabia. The successful candidate will lead geological evaluations, ensuring efficient delivery of vertical and horizontal wells, and provide input on geosteering operations.

Ideal applicants will have over 15 years of experience in unconventional hydrocarbon basins, proficiency in data analytics, and strong interpersonal skills. The position requires working on a 24/7 rotation schedule while training junior professionals.

Qualifications

  • 15+ years of overall experience with at least 5 years in unconventional tight sand and shale plays.

Job description

Job Overview

As an Operations Geoscientist working on the Unconventional Program, the successful candidate will integrate regional to field scale geological evaluations, work hands‑on delivering vertical and horizontal wells in the target zone with minimal supervision, and add value through building, executing, and ensuring the delivery of wells as per a multi‑well field development program.

Key Responsibilities
  • Integrate regional to field scale geological evaluations.
  • Deliver vertical and horizontal wells hands‑on with minimal supervision.
  • Build, execute, and ensure delivery of wells as per a multi‑well field development program.
  • Provide advisory input on geosteering directional wells at the SME level.
  • Use advanced geosteering applications and, when available, geosteering automation or assisted geosteering solutions.
  • Geosteer complex wells independently using advanced LWD technology.
  • Monitor well execution and operations while maintaining proper communication with the rig site.
  • Utilize drilling parameters and well correlations to identify coring points.
  • Provide geological input on target selections, wellbore trajectory, and geosteering operations.
  • Apply knowledge of directional drilling technology, including RSS and downhole motors.
  • Document operations in written reports and illustrate with cross sections, maps, etc.
  • Evaluate current practices to identify improvement opportunities.
  • Present methodology and project evaluation to technical management.
  • Operate on a 24/7 rotation schedule, remotely monitoring operations from headquarters.
  • Shift work days and nights as per an 8‑hour shift program.
  • Train junior professionals to develop required real‑time operations skills.
  • Conduct data analytics using Python, TIBCO Spotfire, or similar tools (preferred).
  • Perform 2‑D and 3‑D seismic interpretation (preferred).
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Geology or a related science.
  • 15+ years of overall experience with at least 5 years in unconventional tight sand and shale plays across different unconventional hydrocarbon basins.
  • Experience in field development with exposure to geological evaluation and multi‑well pad execution specific to active horizontal geosteering operations.
  • Experience providing assistance in well planning and drilling execution; capable of working in a real‑time operations center on shift rotation with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills.
Preferred/Additional Skills
  • Experience with geosteering automation or assisted geosteering.
  • Proficiency with advanced LWD technology.
  • Data analytics skills using Python, TIBCO Spotfire, or similar.
  • 2‑D and 3‑D seismic interpretation capability.
