We are seeking an experienced Director of Engineering to lead the Engineering Department for a major port and terminal operation in Saudi Arabia.
The Director of Engineering drives performance transformation through strong reliability programs, digitalization, Lean/5S implementation, and automation initiatives, ensuring that the terminal’s assets consistently operate at peak availability and optimal safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
1. Reliability & Performance Transformation
- Develop and execute a reliability-centered maintenance strategy (RCM) covering quay cranes, yard equipment, and support facilities.
- Establish KPIs for equipment availability, MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures), and MTTR (Mean Time to Repair).
- Implement Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) to drive ownership and predictive reliability across shifts and maintenance teams.
- Lead continuous improvement programs within Engineering focused on performance analytics and data-driven decision-making.
2. Digital Transformation & Lean/5S
- Champion the digital transformation of the Engineering function through CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems), IoT-based monitoring, and data visualization dashboards.
- Embed Lean and 5S practices in workshops, stores, and field operations to eliminate waste, standardize workflows, and enhance safety.
- Introduce paperless maintenance workflows, digital work orders, and automated reporting systems.
3. Automation & Modernization
- Oversee integration of automation in cranes (ship-to-shore cranes (STS), RTGs) and terminal systems to improve efficiency and quality of automation systems.
- Collaborate with OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) and system integrators on PLC (programmable logic controller) upgrades, sensor installations, and remote diagnostics.
- Ensure proper change management and workforce upskilling for all automation initiatives.
4. Maintenance Operations Management
- Lead day-to-day maintenance of all terminal assets, including crane workshops, plant workshops, reefer power systems, and terminal infrastructure.
- Ensure compliance with OEM maintenance schedules, safety procedures, and environmental standards.
- Drive spare parts optimization, vendor performance management, and cost control.
- Coordinate preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance activities to minimize unplanned downtime.
5. Power Systems & Electrical Infrastructure
- Oversee the terminal’s medium-voltage (MV) power grid, substations, and electrical distribution network.
- Ensure reliable operation of backup generators, UPS (uninterruptible power supply) systems, and energy management systems.
- Guide engineering teams on troubleshooting and upgrading MV panels, protection systems, and SCADA interfaces.
6. Leadership & People Development
- Lead a large multicultural workforce of engineers, technicians, and contractors with a focus on accountability, safety, and motivation.
- Build a structured development framework for national talent, apprentices, and engineers.
- Foster a performance-driven culture emphasizing teamwork, innovation, and operational excellence.
- Ensure alignment between engineering operations and terminal strategic goals.
