Job summary

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Horticulture, Botany, Plant Sciences, Arboriculture, Forestry, or related discipline.
• Certified Arborist designation is preferred.
• 5+ years of relevant professional experience in tree care and arboriculture management.
• Additional training in tree risk assessment, climbing, aerial rescue, chainsaw operations, or advanced arboriculture is advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Conduct routine and specialised tree inspections, maintenance, and health assessments.
• Undertake and supervise pruning: formative, corrective, structural, crown-cleaning and other arboriculture pruning techniques.
• Monitor tree health, identify disease, pests, and environmental stress.
• Recommend and implement preventative and corrective tree-care measures.
• Conduct systematic tree risk assessments to identify defects and hazards for visitors and staff.
• Maintain documentation of risk assessments, interventions, and follow-up inspections.
• Develop comprehensive tree care and preventative maintenance programmes.
• Develop long-term tree succession and replacement plans for continuity and resilience of the garden.

The Arborist is responsible for the specialised care, assessment, management, and long-term conservation of trees across the Botanic Gardens. The role ensures that trees are maintained to high standards of health, structural integrity, safety, and aesthetic quality through appropriate pruning, disease management, risk assessment, monitoring, and preventative care.

The Arborist will conduct tree inspections and inventories, assess tree-related risks, recommend and implement appropriate management actions, and develop long-term tree care and succession plans. The role will also provide specialist arboriculture expertise to support botanic collections, landscape planning, conservation objectives, visitor safety, and tree-related education and interpretation programmes.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct routine and specialised tree inspections, maintenance, and health assessments throughout the Botanic Gardens.
• Undertake and/or supervise appropriate tree pruning, including formative, corrective, structural, crown-cleaning, and other arboriculture pruning techniques.
• Monitor tree health and identify signs of disease, pests, structural defects, environmental stress, nutrient deficiencies, and physiological decline.
• Recommend and implement appropriate preventative and corrective tree-care measures.
• Conduct systematic tree risk assessments to identify structural defects, potential failures, hazardous trees, and risks to visitors, staff, infrastructure, and botanical collections.
• Recommend appropriate risk-management measures, including pruning, monitoring, support systems, access restrictions, treatment, or removal where necessary.
• Maintain appropriate documentation of tree-risk assessments, recommendations, interventions, and follow-up inspections.
• Develop and implement comprehensive tree care and preventative maintenance programmes.
• Develop long-term tree succession and replacement plans to ensure continuity, resilience, and sustainability of the garden's tree collection.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Horticulture, Botany, Plant Sciences, Arboriculture, Forestry, or a related discipline.
• Certified Arborist designation from a recognised professional arboriculture organisation is preferred.
• Demonstrated technical knowledge of tree-care and arboriculture practices is required.
• Additional professional training or certification in tree risk assessment, tree climbing, aerial rescue, chainsaw operations, or advanced arboriculture practices is advantageous.
• Minimum 5+ years of relevant professional experience in tree care and arboriculture management.
