Job summary

Rain is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer to drive technical direction for the backend platform. The role focuses on API integrations with 3rd-party vendors and core systems at the intersection of banking, payroll, and timekeeping.

You will design and implement reliable distributed micro-services, RESTful APIs, and scalable data models while mentoring engineers and aligning engineering practices with business goals. This is a remote role supporting the EMEA region.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of professional experience as an engineer, with a staff or principal level track record.
• Extensive experience designing and building fintech products from concept to scale.
• Strong system design skills and ability to balance speed with long-term health.
• Ownership of large, ambiguous initiatives from concept to completion with proactive problem solving.
• Excellent cross-functional collaboration and communication abilities.

Responsibilities

• Set technical direction and architecture for major backend areas, translating goals into scalable strategy.
• Design and implement reliable systems in a distributed micro-services architecture.
• Build and maintain integrations with 3rd-party vendors and partners.
• Design and implement highly available RESTful APIs for web and mobile apps.
• Establish reusable patterns and libraries to accelerate future product development.
• Enforce observability with logging, metrics, and alerting systems.
• Create and maintain architecture/API/workflow documentation.
• Continuously monitor systems for performance and scalability improvements.
• Mentor engineers and raise the technical bar across the team.
