Job summary

GBL Tech is seeking a Senior Java Engineer in Portugal to lead backend architecture for a strategic client project. You will own outcomes, craft scalable solutions, and bridge code to business impact.

You will design for high availability, mentor teammates, and ensure security-by-design in a dynamic, global-scale environment. Proficiency in English is mandatory for cross-team collaboration.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of hands-on Java development experience, with cloud-native architectures (AWS preferred).
• Deep knowledge of Spring Boot and related Java frameworks for scalable backend services.
• Solid experience with relational and non-relational databases, choosing the right tool for the data pattern.
• Self-starter who defines problems clearly and makes timely, well-founded decisions.
• Ability to build relationships across teams and navigate complex discussions with diplomacy.
• Strong command of English is mandatory.

Responsibilities

What You’ll Be Doing

• Architecture as a Craft: Design for high availability, ensuring that monitoring, logging, and graceful degradation are built into the DNA of every feature. You aim for the "elegant simplest solution" rather than over-engineering.
• Technical Compass: Act as the team’s compass, prioritizing high-value features and translating technical trade-offs - such as cost, risk, and speed - into terms that the client's stakeholders truly care about.
• Cultivating Excellence: Multiply your impact by mentoring teammates, conducting detailed code reviews, and fostering a "security-by-design" culture within the client's engineering team.

What We Are Looking For

• 5+ years of experience with Java and cloud-native architectures (preferably AWS).
• Deep expertise in Spring Boot and related Java frameworks, with a track record of building scalable backend services.
• Solid hands-on experience with both Relational (RDBMS) and Non-Relational (NoSQL) databases. You know when to choose the right tool for the data structure and access pattern.
