Gaming1 in Portugal is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead one product engineering team. The role combines hands-on coding (30–50%) with people leadership and mentoring.
You will focus on creating the conditions for the team to do its best work, adapt to change, and continuously improve. This is a technical leadership role, not a delivery or project management position.
As part of its sustained growth, Gaming1 is looking for a Engineering Manager to join its team in Portugal.
An Engineering Manager (EM) leads one product engineering team and combines:
Hands-on software engineering (30%-50%)
People leadership and mentoring
A strong focus on experimentation, quality, and short feedback loops
The Engineering Manager’s primary role is to create the conditions in which the team can do its best work, adapt to change, and continuously improve. This includes evolving practices and tools over time, such as the responsible adoption of automation and AI when it brings clear value.
This is explicitly not a delivery or project management role.
It is a technical leadership role, close to the team, the code, and the product, without requiring the EM to be the most senior or specialized engineer.
As an Engineering Manager, your mission is to ensure your team:
Continuously delivers the best customer experience and business value
Works in short cycles
Experiments, learns, and improves continuously
Applies strong and pragmatic engineering practices
You focus on enabling the team to succeed by setting clear expectations, fostering ownership, facilitating good decision-making, and removing impediments.
You help the team leverage modern tools and approaches, including AI-assisted engineering practices and product capabilities, when they demonstrably improve quality, speed, or customer experience.
You:
Have a strong software engineering background and are comfortable staying hands-on (30–50%)
Bring experience as an Engineering Manager, Tech Lead, or senior engineer with clear people leadership impact
Care deeply about engineering quality, maintainability, testing, performance, and security
Work closely with Product to focus the team on customer value and outcomes, not just delivery
Create a psychologically safe environment where engineers take ownership, experiment, and continuously improve
Balance autonomy and alignment, enabling the team to make decisions within clear boundaries
Lead through coaching, feedback, and mentoring, rather than command-and-control
Are comfortable operating in short feedback loops, experimenting and learning fast
Are curious and pragmatic about adopting modern tooling, automation, and AI-assisted practices when they bring real value
