Bioinformatics and Biostatistics Technician (Master’s or Doctoral Degree) S2AQUAcoLAB/Ref_04/2026

S2AQUA - Collaborative Laboratory, Association for Sustainable and Smart Aquaculture (S2AQUAcoLAB) is announcing a recruitment and selection process for 1 candidate with a master’s or doctoral degree in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Data Science, Computational Biology, or related fields (M/F) to join the Collaborative Laboratory’s scientific team and conduct advanced analysis of biological, statistical, and computational data applied to sustainable and smart aquaculture, contributing to the development of innovative solutions aligned with S2AQUAcoLAB’s mission and strategic objectives. The candidate to be hired must have at least 5 years of experience in the field.

Funded by the Algarve 2030 Regional Program, co-funded by the European Social Fund Plus (ESF+) and the State Budget.

1. Desired profile

1.1. Training and experience:

• i. Advanced degree (master’s or doctoral) in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Data Science, Computational Biology, Biotechnology, Biomedical Engineering, Statistics, Computer Science, or related fields;
• ii. At least 5 years of professional experience in the field;
• iii. Experience in processing, integrating, and analyzing large sets of biological and experimental data;
• iv. Experience in R&D projects in the fields of life sciences, aquaculture, or biotechnology is preferred.

1.2. Technical skills:

• i. Experience in advanced statistical analysis and data modeling using languages such as R and/or Python;
• ii. Solid knowledge of applied bioinformatics, including the analysis of data from genomics, transcriptomics, metagenomics, or other omics technologies;
• iii. Experience in implementing computational pipelines for the processing and analysis of biological data;
• iv. Knowledge of machine learning and/or artificial intelligence as applied to the analysis of biological data;
• v. Skills in managing, organizing, and visualizing complex databases;
• vi. Knowledge of experimental design, multivariate analysis, and applied biostatistics;
• vii. Experience in multimodal data integration and the development of predictive models will be valued.

1.3. Other requirements:

• i. Fluency in Portuguese and proficiency in English (spoken and written);
• ii. Strong analytical skills and a critical mindset;
• iii. Ability to adapt and integrate into multidisciplinary teams;
• iv. Strong organizational skills, autonomy, and a sense of responsibility;
• v. Proactivity and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously;
• vi. Willingness to travel domestically and internationally.

2. Tasks:

In accordance with and under the guidance of the S2AQUAcoLAB management and coordination team, the work program includes, in particular, the following activities:

• i. Develop and implement bioinformatics and biostatistics analysis pipelines for use in aquaculture research and innovation projects;
• ii. Process, integrate, and interpret data from different sources, including omic, physiological, environmental, and production data;
• iii. Develop statistical models and predictive algorithms to support decision-making and optimize aquaculture production systems;
• iv. Collaborate on experimental design, analysis of results, and the preparation of technical and scientific reports;
• v. Participate in the preparation, implementation, and coordination of national and international R&D projects;
• vi. Support the scientific supervision of students and scholarship recipients;
• vii. Contribute to the scientific dissemination of the results through publications, presentations, and knowledge transfer activities for companies and other S2AQUAcoLAB partners.

3. Remuneration

The gross monthly remuneration may vary between TRU 25 (1 974,41€) and TRU 49 (3 308,07€) of the Single Remuneration Table depending on proven professional experience.

4. Type and duration of contract

The contract is open-ended and will start at a time to be agreed with the successful candidate.

5. Supervision and place of work

The activities will be carried out under the guidance of Dr. Pedro Pousão, President of the Board S2AQUAcoLAB, and Dr. Cátia Marques, scientific coordinator of S2AQUAcoLAB.

The following individuals are eligible to apply for this competition:

• A. Nationals or citizens of other European Union member states;
• B. Citizens of third countries;
• C. Be permanently and habitually resident in Portugal;

6.1 Admissibility Requirements for Applications

• E. A letter of motivation;
• F. Certificate of permanent residence, permanent residence permit or long-term resident status, if applicable;
• G. Documents proving the required conditions, namely qualification certificates indicating the degree obtained and the final classification, and recognised by a Portuguese university if it was obtained abroad;
• E. Copy of ID card (in case of placement - to be sent later).

7. Jury composition

• 1st Effective Member: Pedro Pousão Ferreira, President of the Board - S2AQUAcoLAB;
• 2nd Effective Member: Rui Rocha, Vice-President of the Board - S2AQUAcoLAB;
• 2nd Alternate Member: Iris Silva, Researcher - S2AQUAcoLAB.

8. Selection methods and criteria

Applications considered admissible will be scored from zero (0 minimum score) to twenty (20 maximum score).

Admission to the competition: only candidates who fulfil the requirements set out in this notice will be admitted to the competition.

Assessment method: candidates will be assessed by curriculum evaluation (CA) (100%). An interview will only be held if the jury deems it necessary or in the event of a tie (E).

The curriculum evaluation (CA) will be expressed quantitatively from 0 to 20 values corresponding to the addition of the values obtained in the following objective criteria:

• A - Evaluates academic merit: Academic background (Master’s or Ph.D.) in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Data Science, Computational Biology, Biotechnology, Statistics, Computer Science, or related fields, as well as the candidate’s scientific track record as a researcher, including scientific publications, conference presentations, participation in and/or coordination of research and development projects, advising or co-advising students, and other activities relevant to the field of the competition (0–20 points);
• B - Assesses previous experience in performing the required duties, according to:
• 1) Experience in advanced statistical analysis and modeling of biological data, including the use of statistical tools and programming languages (R, Python, or equivalents) (0–4 points);
• 2) Experience in applied bioinformatics, particularly in the processing and analysis of sequencing, genomic, transcriptomic, metagenomic, or other omics data (0–4 points);
• 3) Experience in developing and implementing computational pipelines and workflows for processing and integrating large volumes of biological data (0–4 points);
• 4) Knowledge and experience in machine learning techniques, artificial intelligence, or the development of predictive models applied to the life sciences or aquaculture (0–4 points);
• 5) Experience in multimodal data integration, database management, and participation in research and innovation projects involving the computational analysis of biological or production data, preferably in the context of aquaculture or complex biological systems (0–4 points).

If there are no applicants with experience in the activities required for the position, the selection committee may decide not to award the position.

8.2. Interview

On the basis of the Curriculum Evaluation, the candidates will be ranked.

If the jury deems it necessary or in the event of a tie, an interview will be held.

The interview will take place in person or by videoconference, and its classification will correspond to the addition of the values obtained in the following criteria:

• a) Interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to build trusting relationships with customers;
• b) Ability to adapt and integrate into a team, strong personal organizational skills, and a sense of responsibility;
• c) Reasoning;
• d) Autonomy, proactivity, and innovation.

These criteria will be scored on a scale of zero to twenty, with the total interview score calculated by dividing the sum of the criteria by five (0 to 20 points).

8.3 Final classification

The final ranking of each candidate will be decided by a simple majority of the members of the jury.

All candidates admitted to the competition will be ranked in order of the marks awarded by the selection board on the basis of the AC.

If it is necessary to carry out an E, the final classification (FC) will be obtained by the weighted sum of the curricular assessment (CA) - with a weight of 40 per cent - and the interview (E) - with a weight of 60 per cent.

The competition jury will hold the meetings necessary to reach a final decision, documenting in the minutes the procedures used, as well as all the elements deemed relevant to the construction of the final decision.

If there are no applications of merit, the jury may decide not to award the application.

9. Communication of the results

The results of the evaluation will be published by email no later than 90 working days after the deadline for submitting the application.

Candidates have a period of 10 working days after the results have been announced to give their opinion, whether they wish to or not, at a prior hearing of interested parties, under the terms of the Code of Administrative Procedure.

The final decision must be taken within 60 working days of the conclusion of the prior hearing of interested parties.

The provisions of the previous paragraphs shall not apply where the decision-making process leads to the award of the post to all candidates, in which case the decision-making process shall be equivalent to a final decision.

10. Homologation

Once the process of hearing interested parties has been completed and assessed by the competition jury, the jury's final decision will be proposed for homologation by the S2AQUAcoLAB Board.
