Job Overview
The Civil Computer-Aided Modeling and Estimating Technician plays a crucial role in supporting the engineering and design team by leveraging advanced computer-aided design (CAD) tools and estimation software for modeling, drafting, and estimating civil engineering projects. This position demands precision, technical computing skills, and effective collaboration with project stakeholders to ensure accurate and actionable project data.
Key Responsibilities
1. Civil Engineering Modeling and Drafting
- Develop, create, and modify detailed 2D and 3D civil engineering models using CAD software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and Revit.
- Provide surface and linework models in Topcon format and include control points when received.
- Perform quality control checks on models and drawings to ensure accuracy and compliance with engineering standards.
2. 2D and 3D Takeoffs
- Use Bluebeam Revu (or Agtek) for horizontal takeoffs.
- Utilize Agtek for 3D takeoffs to determine cut-to-fill from subgrade to stripped or existing surfaces. Identify excavation for shoring, footings, OX, etc., and balance site as needed.
- Utilize PDF information for takeoffs if CAD files are unavailable.
- Cite engineered specifications for quantities where provided (e.g., SILT FENCE PER C1/9.0).
- Enter quantities into estimating bid forms and establish scope with quantified items for new bid forms as necessary.
- Update tracking share files to indicate when takeoffs are in progress and when they are completed.
3. Project Estimation and Cost Analysis
- Assist in preparing project estimates, including material take-off and cost analysis.
- Provide requested takeoffs and percent-complete measurements for ongoing projects.
- Generate cut-to-fill maps of awarded projects with labeled quantities for field resources.
4. Project Management Assistance
- Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and architects to ensure design integrity and compliance with specifications.
- Provide accurate and timely modeling data to support design decisions and project reporting.
5. Quote Procurement and Vendor Coordination
- Analyze newly added projects to identify required materials and subcontractors.
- Send quote requests and organize received quotes in the appropriate project folders.
- Conduct follow-ups as necessary to ensure timely procurement of materials and services.
6. Documentation and Continuous Improvement
- Create and maintain project documentation, ensuring all changes are well-documented.
- Stay updated with the latest technologies and industry trends to utilize CAD and modeling tools efficiently.
Required:
- Associate's degree in civil engineering, Computer-Aided Design, or related field; bachelor's degree preferred.
- Proven experience with civil engineering design and modeling software (AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit, Agtek, Bluebeam).
- Knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices, and materials.
- Proficient in estimating, quantity take-off techniques, and project documentation.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret technical data and specifications.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills for a team-oriented environment.
- High attention to detail and accuracy in all tasks.
Preferred:
- CAD certification or related technical credentials.
- At least 2+ years of experience in civil engineering or related field.
- Familiarity with project management software and methodologies.
