About the role

This role is split to provide diverse opportunities in both general Paediatrics and Neonatal care, within a busy and supportive service. The Paediatric roles include both inpatient care in a Children's Unit housed in new facilities and outpatient clinics where you'll be exposed to a range of clinical presentations. In addition to this there are multiple visiting outpatient clinics from quaternary services to optimise learning opportunities and exposure. We have clinics in cardiology, respiratory and nephrology (Auckland), gastroenterology, neurology, paediatric surgery, and urology (Christchurch), and endocrine, genetics, community paediatrics and infectious disease (Dunedin). We have recently received accreditation for advanced training in community Child Health (CCH). Registrars are involved in acute assessment of children in both the Paediatric Assessment Unit and Emergency Department settings.

Dunedin Hospital has a Level 3 NICU providing care for neonates from 23 weeks gestation, as well as the opportunity to be part of a team involved in neonatal retrievals and transports. As a registrar you will be provided with extensive orientation, along with multiple weekly teaching opportunities and a high level of supportive Consultant supervision.

We are a training site for RACP trainees (both advanced and basic) in both General Paediatrics and Community Child Health training and have very strong link with RACP. The department is highly supportive of registrars sitting their RACP written and clinical exams, which includes supporting Registrars to attend appropriate exam preparatory courses and regular teaching sessions. We also support Registrars sitting exams to attend visiting specialist outpatient clinics. Over the last few years, the Department has run a Mock Clinical Exam for Trainees prior to the RACP clinical exam (this is often also attended by Trainees who are thinking of sitting in the following year). We have supportive Advanced Trainees who are happy to give exam advice, run teaching sessions or listen to long cases. We have Consultants who are/have been RACP clinical examiners who are available for advice and feedback. In the previous years, our department has had high pass rates for trainees sitting both the RACP written and clinical exams.

We also have very strong link with the University of Otago Medical School. As a Registrar you can become an honorary clinical lecturer which gives you access to the University Library resources and this can go on your CV. There is an expectation that you will assist in supporting medical students and will be able to take up other academic opportunities, including research, for those have an interest in these areas. Multiple current and past trainees are enrolled in or have completed PhDs and Master's degrees.

About you

Our ideal candidate will have the following:

• Registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand or be eligible for general or provisional general registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. You can check your eligibility for registration by visiting the Council's website at MCNZ
• A minimum of 2 years post qualification experience and possess a strong interest in Children's Health

It is requirement of the Medical Council of New Zealand that your qualifications are approved through EPIC.
