Job summary

Hynds Group in Palmerston North is seeking a Yard & Customer Service all-rounder who splits time between the front counter and the yard, keeps the stock tidy, operates the forklift, and delivers service to civil, water, wastewater, and drainage customers.

Reporting to the Branch Manager, you’ll handle quotes and orders on the spot, load and unload trucks, and help customers with loading, while maintaining safety, accuracy of paperwork, and a clean, efficient yard environment.

Qualifications

• Strength in both counter and yard roles, not just one side.
• Full NZ Driver's Licence and Forklift Licence (F endorsement).
• People skills and practical stock-control abilities.
• Able to lift up to 20kg and stay fit for varied tasks.

Responsibilities

• Split your day between the front counter and the yard, staying switched on for both.
• Run the yard: stock control, picking orders, cycle counts, and housekeeping.
• Operate forklift safely, perform daily checks and report defects.
• Load/unload trucks and assist customers with loading, by hand or forklift.
• Serve customers with quotes, orders, advice and on-the-spot queries.
• Keep paperwork accurate: dockets, invoicing, receipting, credits, inwards goods.
• Lead health & safety and keep the site secure at day’s end.

Job description

This one's for the all-rounders. Not a counter job with a bit of yard work tacked on, and not a yard job with the odd customer chat – it's genuinely both, in equal measure.
We're after someone who can help a customer nail their order one minute, then be out loading their truck the next, and be just as good at both. As our Yard & Customer Service person in Palmerston North, you're the engine room of the branch. You'll keep the yard safe, stocked and tidy, run the forklift like it's second nature, and give customers across the civil, water, wastewater and drainage industries the kind of service that keeps them coming back.

Reporting to the Branch Manager, you'll take pride in a well-run yard and a job done right – and you won't shy away from either side of the role.

What you'll be doing

• Splitting your day between the front counter and the yard – and being switched on for both
• Running the yard – stock control, picking orders, cycle counts, and keeping everything in its place
• Operating the forklift safely and efficiently, plus daily checks, basic upkeep, and reporting any defects
• Loading and unloading trucks and helping customers load up, by hand or forklift
• Serving customers – quotes, orders, advice and sorting queries on the spot
• Keeping the paperwork right – dockets, invoicing, receipting, credits and inwards goods
• Leading from the front on health & safety, and keeping the site secure at day's end

What you'll bring

• Genuine strength in both areas – you're comfortable and capable on the counter and in the yard, not just one
• A full NZ Driver's Licence and Forklift Licence (F endorsement) – this role needs someone confident on the forklift
• The people skills to talk to anyone and the practical nous to keep a yard humming
• Solid computer skills and a good head for stock and detail
• A reasonable level of physical fitness – you'll be on your feet and moving product up to 20kg
• Product knowledge in our industry is a bonus, but we'll back you to learn
