Job summary

Stats NZ is seeking a Senior Cloud DevOps Engineer to shape a secure, resilient Microsoft cloud environment in Wellington. The role blends cloud engineering, platform operations, automation, security and technical leadership across Microsoft 365, Azure, Entra ID and related services.

You will design, implement and optimize cloud solutions, lead automation initiatives, mentor engineers, and collaborate with security, architecture and operations to deliver trusted, governed outcomes for government

Qualifications

• Proven experience administering and supporting Microsoft 365 platforms and services.
• Strong experience with Microsoft Azure services in a large or complex environment.
• Experience with Microsoft Entra ID, identity management, authentication, and access control.
• Experience implementing cloud security, governance, and compliance controls.
• Strong scripting and automation skills, particularly PowerShell.
• Experience supporting enterprise cloud platforms and services.
• Ability to analyse and resolve complex technical issues.
• Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
• A commitment to continuous improvement and knowledge sharing.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, support and continuously improve Microsoft365 and Azure services.
• Lead automation initiatives that improve reliability, consistency, and operational efficiency.
• Manage and enhance identity and access management services, including Microsoft Entra ID.
• Implement and maintain security, governance, compliance, and information protection capabilities.
• Develop and maintain PowerShell‑based automation and cloud management tooling.
• Support cloud platform operations, incident response, troubleshooting, and service improvement activities.
• Provide technical leadership and mentoring to other engineers.
• Contribute to platform strategy, architecture, standards, and roadmaps.
• Work collaboratively across Technology Services and business teams to deliver secure, effective technology outcomes.
