Job summary

About The Role

We are looking for experienced Senior Building Control Officers to join our growing team in the Auckland Region. Opportunities are available across Building Consent Processing, Inspections, or a combination of both, depending on your skills, experience and competencies.

This is an opportunity to join a knowledgeable and supportive nationwide team and play a key role in delivering high-quality, consistent and compliant building control services to Building Consent Authorities (BCAs) across New Zealand.

As a Senior Building Control Officer, you will bring strong technical expertise and sound regulatory knowledge to the assessment of building consent applications and/or inspections. You will work confidently and independently, applying the Building Act, Building Code and relevant legislation to achieve robust and practical compliance outcomes.

The role also provides an opportunity to act as a technical leader and mentor, supporting colleagues, sharing knowledge and contributing to the ongoing development of team capability. You will work closely with BCAs, builders, designers, homeowners and other industry professionals, providing clear, practical and professional advice throughout the consenting and inspection process.

Depending on your area of expertise, responsibilities may include processing complex building consent applications, undertaking inspections, resolving technical issues, providing regulatory guidance and supporting quality assurance across projects.

Duties & Responsibilities

Process building consent applications in accordance with the Building Act, Building Code and relevant legislation.

Undertake building inspections and assess compliance with approved documentation and legislative requirements.

Apply sound technical judgement when assessing complex or challenging building matters.

Provide clear, practical and professional technical advice to homeowners, builders, designers, BCAs and other stakeholders.

Identify and resolve technical and compliance issues, escalating matters where appropriate.

Maintain accurate records, documentation and reporting to support quality assurance and regulatory compliance.

Provide technical support, guidance and mentoring to Building Control Officers and contribute to building team capability.

Share knowledge and experience across the wider nationwide team to support consistency and best practice.

Maintain and develop competency through ongoing professional development, competency assessments and CPD.

Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, identifying opportunities to improve systems, processes and service delivery.

Build and maintain strong working relationships with BCAs, clients, industry professionals and colleagues.

Support consistent, high-quality regulatory outcomes while delivering a professional and customer-focused service.

About You

This opportunity will suit an experienced Building Control Officer with strong technical capability, sound regulatory knowledge and the confidence to manage complex building control matters independently.

To be considered for the role, you will bring:

A Regulation 18-compliant qualification and current Competency Assessment.

A current full New Zealand driver’s licence.

Recent and relevant experience within the New Zealand building and construction industry.

Strong knowledge of the New Zealand Building Act, Building Code and associated legislation, regulations and compliance requirements.

Proven ability to assess building consent applications and/or undertake inspections, applying sound technical judgement to achieve consistent, compliant outcomes.

Strong computer literacy, including proficiency with Microsoft Office and relevant consent, inspection or workflow management systems.

Excellent communication and customer service skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with BCAs, builders, designers, homeowners and industry stakeholders.

The ability to communicate complex technical and regulatory information clearly and confidently.

Confidence managing challenging situations, resolving technical issues and providing practical, solutions-focused advice.

Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to work autonomously and manage competing priorities.

A proactive approach to improving systems, processes and service delivery.

A commitment to ongoing professional development, competency and CPD.

A collaborative approach, with the ability to share knowledge, provide technical guidance and support colleagues.
