Job summary

Solutions Team in Christchurch, South Island, is seeking experienced Building Control Officers to join our growing team. Opportunities exist in processing, inspections, or a combination, with roles across the Canterbury region.

You will assess compliance with the Building Act and Building Code, provide practical advice to BCAs and customers, and support quality assurance and regulatory compliance. NZ Residency is required.

About The Role

We are looking for experienced Building Control Officers to join our growing team. Opportunities are available in Processing, Inspections, or a combination of both, with positions available throughout the Canterbury regions.

As part of a knowledgeable and supportive nationwide team, you will play an important role in delivering high-quality building control services to Building Consent Authorities (BCAs) across New Zealand. We are seeking professionals who are technically competent, customer-focused, and committed to achieving consistent and compliant outcomes within the building regulatory environment.

Depending on your skills, experience, and competencies, you will be responsible for processing building consent applications, undertaking building inspections, or performing both functions. You will apply your technical expertise to assess compliance with the Building Act, Building Code, and associated legislation, while providing practical advice and support to BCAs, industry professionals, and customers.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Process building consent applications in accordance with the Building Act, Building Code, and relevant legislation.
• Undertake building inspections and assess compliance with approved documentation and legislative requirements.
• Provide clear, practical, and professional technical advice to homeowners, builders, designers, and other stakeholders.
• Maintain accurate records, documentation, and reporting to support quality assurance and regulatory compliance.
• Contribute to the development of team capability through knowledge sharing, mentoring, and technical support.
• Maintain competency requirements through ongoing professional development, competency assessments, and Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
• Support continuous improvement initiatives by contributing ideas and feedback that enhance service delivery, systems, and processes.
• Build and maintain positive working relationships with clients, BCAs, industry professionals, and colleagues to support effective service outcomes.

About You

To be considered for this role, you will hold a Regulation 18-compliant qualification, current Competency Assessment, and a full New Zealand driver’s licence.

You will bring recent experience within the building and construction industry, supported by a strong understanding of the New Zealand Building Act, Building Code and relevant legislative and compliance requirements. Strong computer literacy is essential, including proficiency with Microsoft Office and industry-specific systems such as consent processing, inspection and workflow management platforms.

You’ll have excellent communication and customer service skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with customers, contractors, industry professionals and other stakeholders. You’ll be confident communicating technical information, managing challenging situations professionally and working collaboratively to achieve practical, compliant outcomes.

Experience within a Building Consent Authority (BCA) or similar regulatory environment would be advantageous. However, we welcome applications from those with relevant industry experience, transferable skills and a genuine commitment to ongoing learning and professional development.
