Job description

Are you a natural problem solver, a pragmatic solutions-focused thinker, and someone who thrives in a team-oriented environment? We're looking for a motivated Building Control Officer to help ensure building work keeps our communities safe, resilient, and thriving. We're particularly interested in candidates with strong practical, on-the-ground experience and the confidence to be out on site, engaging directly with builders and inspecting work as it progresses.

This is a great opportunity for an experienced building professional, someone looking to transition off the tools, or an individual working towards the relevant qualifications to grow their career in a supportive, community-focused environment.

About the Role

As a Building Control Officer, you will undertake key Building Consent Authority (BCA) functions and support Territorial Authority functions, ensuring compliance with the Building Act, New Zealand Building Code, and associated legislation. You will have the opportunity to work across a diverse range of residential and commercial projects, providing technical expertise, assessing compliance, conducting site inspections, and supporting customers through the building consent process from application through to Code Compliance Certificate (CCC).

No two days are the same. You'll combine office-based assessment work with field inspections, helping deliver safe, compliant, and sustainable building outcomes for our district.

What You'll Be Doing

You'll help ensure building work across the district is safe, compliant, and meets legislative requirements. While the primary need is build capacity in the inspecting roles, you will also assess building consent applications, review plans and specifications, conduct site inspections, and provide technical advice to customers, builders, and designers. The role includes identifying and investigating unauthorised or non-compliant building work, inspecting earthquake-prone buildings and swimming pool barriers, processing LIM applications, and completing final assessments for Code Compliance Certificates. Working both in the field and the office, you'll contribute to continuous improvement and deliver a professional, customer-focused building control service that supports a safe and resilient community.

About You

We're looking for a motivated and capable professional with a relevant building qualification (or a commitment to working towards one), strong technical knowledge, and an understanding of building legislation, construction practices, and compliance requirements. You'll have excellent attention to detail and be confident in making sound decisions while applying legislation in a practical and consistent way.

You will be an effective communicator who can build positive relationships with customers, builders, designers, and other stakeholders, balancing regulatory requirements with a customer-focused approach. We value individuals who are professional, ethical, and accountable, with the ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and deliver high-quality outcomes. A commitment to continuous improvement, adaptability, and an appreciation for diversity and community partnerships will also contribute to your success in this role.

Why South Taranaki?

We offer flexible working, ongoing professional development, a supportive team culture, access to a sick leave bank and long-term retention benefits. If you're relocating, we can also provide visa sponsorship and relocation assistance for eligible applicants.

If you're looking for meaningful work where your decisions genuinely make a difference every day, we'd love to hear from you.

The salary range for this position is between $80,750pa and $109,700pa and the appointed starting level will be dependent on skills and experience and will be discussed during interviews with shortlisted candidates.

Applicants for this position must be legally entitled to work in New Zealand, therefore must have NZ residency or hold a valid NZ work visa. In terms of residence class visa applications, priority will be given where the applicant is in New Zealand.

Applications close at 4pm on Friday 25 September 2026 or when a suitable candidate has been appointed to the role.
