Job summary

Thames-Coromandel District Council is seeking an experienced Building Control Processing professional to join our Building Unit in a permanent, full-time role in our Thames office. You will assess and process building consent applications, provide technical guidance to applicants and professionals, and ensure compliance within statutory timeframes.

You'll work closely with customers and industry partners to deliver safe, compliant, and fit-for-purpose buildings across the district, while

Qualifications

• Experience in Building Consent Processing or Building Control within a NZ local government environment
• Sound knowledge of the Building Act 2004, NZ Building Code and associated regulations
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build professional relationships

Responsibilities

• Assess and process building consent applications in accordance with the Building Act 2004.
• Review plans and supporting documentation, making sound compliance decisions.
• Provide technical advice to applicants, builders, architects, engineers, and other stakeholders.
• Manage consent applications efficiently, ensuring statutory timeframes are met.
• Maintain accurate records and documentation within Council systems.
• Deliver excellent customer service and respond to building-related enquiries.
• Contribute to quality assurance, audits, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Build strong working relationships with customers, industry professionals, and internal teams.

You will play a key role in ensuring building consent applications are assessed accurately and efficiently, helping to ensure homes and buildings across our district are safe, compliant, and fit for purpose. Your expertise will be valued as you navigate complex applications, provide sound technical advice, and support positive outcomes for customers and stakeholders.

• Experience in Building Consent Processing or Building Control within a New Zealand local government environment
• An appropriate qualification in Building Control (or currently working towards this)
• Sound knowledge of the Building Act 2004, New Zealand Building Code and associated regulations.
• Proven ability to interpret legislation and apply it in a practical and consistent way
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective relationships and provide professional advice
• Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and computer literacy
• Excellent time management and the ability to work within statutory timeframes
• A commitment to continuous learning and professional development
