Job summary

Coromandel District Council is seeking an experienced Building Control Officer Processing to join our Building Unit in Thames. You will assess and process building consent applications, providing sound technical advice and ensuring compliance.

Based in Coromandel lifestyle, you will manage timeframes, maintain records, and deliver excellent customer service while supporting continuous improvement and stakeholder collaboration.

Qualifications

• Experience in Building Consent Processing or Building Control within a NZ local government environment.
• Qualification in Building Control or currently working towards this.
• Sound knowledge of the Building Act 2004 and NZ Building Code.

Responsibilities

• Assess and process building consent applications under the Building Act 2004.
• Review plans and supporting documentation, ensuring compliance.
• Provide technical advice to applicants, builders, architects, engineers and other stakeholders.
• Manage consent applications efficiently within statutory timeframes.
• Maintain accurate records in Council systems and documentation.
• Deliver excellent customer service and respond to building-related enquiries.
• Contribute to QA, audits and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Build strong working relationships with customers, industry professionals and internal teams.

We have an opportunity for an experienced Building Control Officer Processing to join our Building Unit in a permanent, full-time position based in our Thames office.

You will play a key role in ensuring building consent applications are assessed accurately and efficiently, helping to ensure homes and buildings across our district are safe, compliant, and fit for purpose. Your expertise will be valued as you navigate complex applications, provide sound technical advice, and support positive outcomes for customers and stakeholders.

Key responsibilities:

• Assess and process building consent applications in accordance with the Building Act 2004.
• Review plans and supporting documentation, making sound compliance decisions.
• Provide technical advice and guidance to applicants, builders, architects, engineers, and other stakeholders.
• Manage consent applications efficiently, ensuring statutory timeframes are achieved.
• Maintain accurate records and documentation within Council systems.
• Deliver excellent customer service and respond to building-related enquiries.
• Contribute to quality assurance, audits, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Build strong working relationships with customers, industry professionals, and internal teams.

We're looking for someone with:

• Experience in Building Consent Processing or Building Control within a New Zealand local government environment
• An appropriate qualification in Building Control (or currently working towards this)
• Sound knowledge of the Building Act 2004, New Zealand Building Code and associated regulations.
• Proven ability to interpret legislation and apply it in a practical and consistent way
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective relationships and provide professional advice
• Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and computer literacy
• Excellent time management and the ability to work within statutory timeframes
• A commitment to continuous learning and professional development
