Job summary

Superchill in Gisborne is seeking a skilled Refrigeration Engineer to join our local team. You will install, repair, operate, and maintain refrigeration and air conditioning systems across commercial and industrial sites.

This permanent, full-time role offers 40 hours per week with possible weekend work, a strong team environment, and opportunities to advance your trade with a national company. Applicants must hold NZ EST Licence (or equivalent) and NZ mechanical trade qualification; relocation

Qualifications

• New Zealand Mechanical Trade (Level 4) or 3 years’ experience.
• Current Electrical Service Technician (EST) Licence (Limited or Full).
• Proven experience in commercial HVAC and refrigeration service/maintenance.
• Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
• Strong fault-finding and problem-solving ability.
• Competent with job management systems and reporting.
• Full NZ Driver’s Licence preferred.

Responsibilities

• Installation, repairs, service and maintenance across Refrigeration and HVAC systems.
• Installation of commercial, light commercial, chillers and industrial systems.
• Carry out repairs on faulty Refrigeration and Air Conditioning equipment.

About the role

Are you passionate about delivering top-quality refrigeration solutions? We’re looking for an experienced Refrigeration Engineer to become a key part of our Gisborne team.

Reporting to the Branch Manager, you’ll bring your expertise and industry know-how to tackle a variety of projects. Your role will focus on installing, repairing, operating, and maintaining refrigeration and air conditioning systems – ensuring our clients receive exceptional service every time.

This role is permanent full-time with a guarantee of 40 hours per week and may include weekend work as and when required.

To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate a high standard of workmanship, strong attention to detail, and genuine pride in your trade. You will have a solid work ethic and the ability to work efficiently with minimal supervision, while consistently taking accountability for your work and outcomes.

You will approach your work with a team-first mindset and follow company systems and processes. Working beside a solid team of skilled industry specialists you will be required to contribute, collaborate, and continuously improve in this role. You will also bring proven experience and strong technical knowledge within the HVAC and refrigeration sector.

Daily, you will be responsible for:

• Installation, repairs, service and maintenance across various Refrigeration and HVAC systems.
• Installation of commercial, light commercial, chillers and industrial refrigeration and HVAC systems.
• Undertake and ensure tasks are completed to the quality and speed expected of a qualified engineer.
• Carry out repairs on faulty Refrigeration and Air Conditioning equipment.
• Make recommendations to replace equipment if the expected cost to repair exceeds possible replacement cost.
• Collect data for job reports, assets reports, and quoting – ensuring all information and records are loaded on the job tracking system and/or company files.
• Carry out preventive maintenance of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning equipment and system – recording asset faults and reporting back to office with faults for further repairs pricing as required.

Skills, Experience, and Education Expectations

• New Zealand Mechanical Trade (Level 4) or 3 years’ experience.
• Current Electrical Service Technician (EST) Licence (Limited or Full), or an equivalent overseas qualification.
• Proven prior experience in commercial HVAC and Refrigeration service and maintenance.
• Ability to work well under pressure, manage multiple priorities, and meet tight deadlines.
• Strong fault-finding and problem-solving ability.
• Competent with job management systems and reporting.
• Full New Zealand Driver’s Licence is preferred.

This is a senior position requiring the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Candidates must therefore hold the appropriate certification to legally perform the role.

New Zealand-based applicants are required to hold a current Electrical Service Technician (EST) Licence. Applicants from overseas must hold an equivalent qualification and be eligible to obtain New Zealand registration, including successfully completing any required conversion assessments or examinations.
