New Business Development Representative – Engineering Supplies Based in Whanganui

Are you a people person who's never worked in sales? Good. You could be exactly who we're looking for.

We're a well-established engineering supplies business and we're growing. We need someone to get out there, meet and work with new customers through various means including face to face, phone & video calls, to build lasting commercial B2B relationships across New Zealand.

Here's the honest pitch: we don't necessarily want someone with a sales background. We've found that experienced salespeople often come with habits we'd rather not untrain. What we want is the right kind of person - someone we can build from the ground up, our way.

What "the right kind of person" looks like:

You're naturally at ease with new people. You can walk into a workshop, a yard, or a site office, look someone in the eye, introduce yourself with confidence, and have them relaxed and talking within two minutes. You don't need a script for that - it's just who you are.

You speak clearly and communicate well. Our customers are practical, straight-talking people working in technical environments, and they'll respect you quickly if you're direct, honest, and easy to understand.

You're personally settled and grounded. This role involves regular travel - a mix of flights and driving from our Whanganui base - and you'll need to be someone whose life outside work is stable enough to support that kind of commitment. We're investing heavily in you, and we're looking for someone equally committed to the long game.

You're genuinely coachable. We have a structured, professional sales development programme and you'll spend a period of time working alongside experienced team members before going out alone. You need to be the kind of person who takes that seriously, absorbs it, and applies it.

You're physically up for the lifestyle. When the time comes, regular trips around the country, time away from home, and the energy to show up sharp every day is part of the deal.

What the role actually looks like day to day:

This isn't a role where you're thrown straight onto a plane and into the deep end. You'll spend an extended period based at our Whanganui office working through our training programme first - building your product knowledge, your skills, and your confidence - before any serious field work begins. That foundation is non-negotiable, and we take it seriously.

Once you get as far as travel & F2F calls, the majority of your time will still be office-based - phone calls, emails, video calls, and the preparation, planning, and follow-up that makes field time effective. Momentum will build from there, starting with approx. two days in every fortnight out visiting customers, evolving as your territory and customer base develops.

We run a KPI-driven business and this role is no different. You'll have clear, measurable targets to work towards - activity-based early on, and increasingly results-based as you develop.

What you don’t need:
  • Sales experience (in fact, less is more)
  • Engineering or product knowledge (we'll train you thoroughly)
  • A polished CV full of targets and quotas
What's on the table:
  • A proper, structured onboarding and sales training programme
  • A starting remuneration that's genuinely reflective of a junior role - we're straightforward about that - but one that grows along with your performance
  • Uncapped incentives
  • Access to company and rental vehicles for travel, with a dedicated company vehicle on the table once you've proven yourself in the role
  • A business that invests in its people for the long term
One final thing:

We take hiring seriously. Unless you're early in your working life with little or no employment history, we will ask for previous employer references - and we do follow them up.

(note - we tend to receive large volumes of applications so don't necessarily reply to all of them, however if your application is of interest to us you can expect to hear from us within a week)
