Job summary

Studio Tatami, a small Auckland-based interior design studio specialising in commercial hospitality, is seeking an intermediate interior/spatial designer for a hands-on contract role. You will work across hospitality interiors from spatial planning and design development through to SketchUp modelling, documentation, joinery and presentation work.

The role is freelance/contract with immediate start, likely through the end of the year, and roughly 2–4 days per week initially.

Qualifications

• Around 2–5+ years of relevant interior, spatial or architectural design experience.
• Strong SketchUp and Layout skills.
• Experience producing construction / design documentation, ideally in Layout.
• Confidence with spatial planning and design development.
• Experience with commercial interiors, ideally hospitality but not necessarily.
• A good understanding of joinery, materials and interior detailing.
• The ability to work from partially developed briefs and progress work with limited supervision.
• Strong communication and organisation.
• A practical, solutions-focused approach to live projects.

Responsibilities

• Progress work from a clear brief, markups and project information with limited supervision.
• Work across hospitality interiors from spatial planning through to SketchUp modelling and documentation.
• Produce layout drawings, joinery and presentation work.
• Coordinate with the studio director on design development and detailing.

Intermediate Commercial Interior / Spatial Designer — Contract

Studio Tatami is a small Auckland-based interior design studio specialising primarily in commercial hospitality projects.

The studio has grown quickly and I’m looking for an experienced intermediate interior / spatial designer to work alongside me across a busy pipeline of live projects.

This is a hands‑on contract role suited to someone who is confident progressing work independently from a clear brief, markups, conversations and existing project information. You’ll be working across hospitality interiors at different stages, from spatial planning and design development through to SketchUp modelling, documentation, joinery and presentation work.

Current projects range from cafés and restaurants to larger bars, pubs and multi-site hospitality rollouts.

I’m looking for someone with:

Experience with SketchUp Layout is essential for this current opportunity.

This role will initially be on freelance / contract basis, with an immediate start, likely continuing until the end of the year - and the potential for regular ongoing work. I expect the workload to be approximately 2–4 days per week initially, depending on availability, project demand and experience.

The role would suit someone who enjoys working in a small studio environment, wants exposure to a wide variety of hospitality projects, and is comfortable taking real ownership of parts of a project while working closely with the studio director.

Rate: approximately $40–50/hour depending on experience.

Auckland-based is strongly preferred, as there will be value in working together in person and occasionally attending sites.
