Job summary

Asym Design in Rangiora, North Canterbury, is seeking an experienced Intermediate Architectural Technician to join our growing residential team. You’ll produce working drawings and building consent documentation using Archicad, and ensure compliance with the NZ Building Code.

This hands-on role covers developed design through consent, with peer review of smaller projects, coordination with engineers, and a collaborative, small-team environment.

Qualifications

• NZ residential drafting experience is required.
• Solid Archicad experience is essential.
• Knowledge of the NZ Building Code and E2/AS1 is required.
• Experience producing building consent documentation.
• Ability to peer review smaller residential projects.

Overview

Asym Design is looking for an experienced Intermediate Architectural Technician to join our growing team in Rangiora.

We’re after someone with solid residential experience who is already comfortable producing working drawings and building consent documentation, understands the NZ Building Code, and knows their way around Archicad.

The role will be mainly focused on residential projects, including new homes, renovations and extensions. You’ll work across projects from developed design through to consent, helping turn good design into clear, practical and buildable documentation.

We’re a small team, so we’re looking for someone who enjoys being involved in the whole project rather than just one small part of it.

About Asym Design

Asym Design is a residential architectural design studio based in Rangiora, North Canterbury.

We work on a wide range of residential projects, from straightforward renovations and new homes through to larger and more detailed custom builds.

We like to keep things practical and down to earth. Good design is important to us, but so is making sure what we draw can actually be built, gets through council smoothly and works for the client.

The Opportunity

As an Intermediate Architectural Technician, you’ll be involved across a range of residential projects including:

• New homes
• Architectural and custom homes
• Renovations and extensions
• Alterations and additions
• Smaller residential projects
• More complex residential builds

Your main focus will be taking projects through developed design, working drawings and building consent documentation.

You’ll also have the opportunity to provide input into detailing and construction solutions, work closely with consultants and builders, and help peer review smaller projects within the office.

Key Responsibilities

• Produce residential working drawings and building consent documentation in Archicad
• Develop clear, accurate and buildable construction details
• Work with the NZ Building Code, NZS 3604, E2/AS1 and other relevant standards
• Coordinate documentation with engineers, truss designers and other consultants
• Work through council RFIs and consent requirements
• Manage your own projects through the documentation stages
• Confidently peer review smaller residential projects and help identify potential issues
• Maintain a good level of drawing quality and consistency across projects
• Work alongside the rest of the team to keep projects moving

About You

We’re looking for someone who already has a good grounding in residential documentation and can step into the role with confidence.

Ideally, you’ll have:

• Around 3+ years of NZ architectural technician/drafting experience
• Strong residential working drawing experience
• Good Archicad experience – essential
• A solid understanding of the NZ Building Code and residential construction
• Familiarity with NZS 3604 and E2/AS1
• Experience preparing building consent documentation
• Confidence working through council RFIs
• Enough experience to comfortably peer review smaller residential projects
• Good construction and detailing knowledge
• Strong attention to detail without getting stuck on every minor item
• Good communication skills and an easy-going attitude
• The ability to work well as part of a small team

An LBP Design licence would be an advantage, but isn’t essential.
