Job description

Fleet Body & Paint Technician – Heavy Vehicles | Glendene, West Auckland

$33 – $40 per hour, depending on experience | Full-Time

About the role

Rubbish Direct is looking for a Fleet Body & Paint Technician to help maintain, repair and improve the condition and appearance of our fleet of rubbish trucks.

This is a hands-on role for someone who takes pride in good workmanship and enjoys seeing a vehicle leave the workshop looking better than when it came in.

You’ll work across truck body repairs, panel replacement, rust and dent repairs, surface preparation, spray painting and refinishing, with opportunities to assist with minor mechanical and workshop tasks.

Our promise to customers is simple: rubbish collection they do not have to chase.

Our drivers make that promise real on the road. Our workshop helps keep that promise moving.

Our trucks work hard every day, and appearance is only part of the job. Damage, corrosion and neglected bodywork can become bigger and more expensive problems if they are not dealt with early.

That’s why we’re looking for someone who can identify what needs attention, work independently, maintain a high standard and take ownership of the job from preparation through to finished result.

What you’ll be doing
  • Remove, repair and refit body panels on compactor, box body and gantry trucks
  • Repair cab and body damage, including dents, rust and damaged panels
  • Strip, repair and refit doors, seals, hinges and related hardware
  • Prepare surfaces through sanding, grinding, filling, priming and finishing
  • Carry out spray painting, touch-ups and refinishing on truck bodies, cabs and equipment
  • Mix and match paint colours to fleet standards
  • Prepare and repaint truck wheels
  • Carry out minor welding repairs where appropriately qualified
  • Replace basic items such as lights, reflectors, trims and fittings
  • Assist with simple mechanical and A-service work once trained
  • Identify body, structural or mechanical issues and report them to the Workshop Manager
  • Keep accurate records of repairs, paintwork and panel replacements
  • Help maintain a clean, organised and safe workshop
What we offer
  • Stable full-time work with an established West Auckland based company
  • A fleet-based role where you get to know the trucks and equipment properly
  • Variety across panel work, painting, refinishing, welding and light mechanical work
  • Training in fleet-specific equipment and workshop procedures
  • Training in basic A-service procedures
  • Training in tyre changing and wheel handling
  • Daily meals provided
  • Profit share after eligibility criteria are met
  • Southern Cross health insurance after eligibility
  • Long-service rewards
  • Staff welfare support
  • A company that values people who work hard and do the job properly
  • A workshop environment where practical skills and good workmanship are valued

When the business does well, our people share in that success.

Pay: $33 – $40 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.

Training specifically identified in the original JD includes A-service procedures, tyre and wheel handling, and fleet-specific body components such as compactor units, gantry systems and box bodies.

What we are looking for
  • Practical experience in panel beating, automotive body repair, vehicle refinishing or similar work
  • Strong hands-on skills in dent repair, rust repair and body preparation
  • Experience with sanding, grinding, cutting, priming and spray-painting equipment
  • Good understanding of paint preparation and refinishing
  • Ability to work independently and manage your own workflow
  • Takes pride in workmanship and pays attention to detail
  • Physically comfortable working on large commercial vehicles
  • Reliable, organised and able to communicate well with the workshop and operations teams
  • The legal right to work in New Zealand

A trade qualification in panel beating or automotive painting would be an advantage.

Experience with commercial trucks, heavy vehicles, welding, mechanical work or fleet maintenance would also be valuable.

A Class 2 licence is desirable but is not essential for the right person.
