Job summary

Tradestaff New Zealand is seeking an experienced Diesel Mechanic in Hastings to service earthmoving equipment, civil construction machinery, trucks, utes, and light commercial vehicles in a busy workshop.

The role is primarily workshop-based with occasional on-site callouts; you’ll perform servicing, diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs, aiming for reliability across Hawke's Bay projects.

Immediate start; wage $35–$40 per hour with weekly pay; join a leading Hawke's Bay employer.

Qualifications

• Diesel or heavy automotive trade qualification (or equivalent) is required.
• Experience with earthmoving equipment, civil construction machinery, trucks, utes, or light commercial vehicles preferred.
• Strong diagnostic and fault-finding skills across diesel systems.

Job description

We're looking for an experienced Diesel Mechanic to join a well-established operation based in Hastings.

If you're passionate about keeping earthmoving equipment, civil construction machinery, trucks, utes, and light commercial vehicles running at their best, this is an opportunity to join a busy workshop where no two days are the same.

Working with a diverse fleet, you'll carry out servicing, diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs on equipment that supports civil construction, earthmoving, transport, and infrastructure projects across Hawke's Bay.

This is a primarily workshop-based role, with the occasional opportunity to attend on-site breakdowns and service callouts when required.

Location: Hastings, Hawke's Bay

Start date: Immediate start

Pay rate: $35–$40 per hour + weekly pay

About the role

Join a skilled team servicing and maintaining a broad range of diesel-powered vehicles and machinery used across the civil construction and transport sectors. You'll tackle everything from routine servicing to complex diagnostics, helping keep essential equipment operating safely and efficiently.

Key responsibilities

• Service, diagnose, and repair earthmoving equipment, civil construction machinery, trucks, utes, and light commercial vehicles
• Carry out scheduled servicing and preventative maintenance
• Diagnose and repair diesel, hydraulic, electrical, steering, braking, and drivetrain faults
• Complete engine, transmission, suspension, and mechanical repairs
• Attend on-site breakdowns and service callouts when required
• Maintain accurate service records and follow safe work practices
• Keep the workshop clean, organised, and operating safely

What we're looking for

• Relevant diesel or heavy automotive trade qualification (or equivalent experience)
• Proven experience working on earthmoving equipment, civil construction machinery, trucks, utes, or light commercial vehicles
• Strong diagnostic and fault-finding skills across diesel, hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems
• Full NZ Class 1 Driver Licence
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• A positive attitude with a strong commitment to quality workmanship
• Ability to pass a pre-employment drug test
